Probably cymbals, or once I bought a 2nd drum set. That was kinda cool

I think that's a bit of an outdated mentality in the sense that, you're not "battling" with a better player per se. You're trying to play your hands as optimally as possible.

It happens to be against a better player. That doesn't make the play unprofitable inherently though.

It's perfectly natural to have some fear of certain players. As long as we still play well vs them, that's fine, and again there's value to expanding your comfort zone.

Agreed 100%

Youre not trying to out-aggro them or trying to level them. Youre trying to avoid giving your money away to them by playing balanced against them. Balanced play includes bluffing when appropriate, sometimes big bluffs so they cant just run you over and play 'you check i bet' strategy against you

I held my first meet up game last night, in Detroit.

The highlights:

I was going to give action to those that give action. I'm not trying to play super tight pre and fold every hand. It's 1/2 and I want to have fun and the people that came to have fun. It's not business as usual.

Hand 1, we open 2-4o in EP.

A player whom I know very well 3b us. Folds around.

This guy gives more action than any player I've ever sat with before. He watches the vlog. He was personally responsible for giving action to me in two hands resulting in a 2k upswing for me at 2/5. He basically donated 2k to me.

We call. HU to the flop, J-2-2r.

We check, he downbets. Started the hand with about 285.

We C/R him. He looks puzzled, and he doesn't like it, but he calls. He is sticky and he hates folding. Don't bluff this guy ever.

Anyways, J-2-2r, turn 10d (two diamonds).

We jam for about pot. Expecting him to have Jx or overpair. He will never fold this, and may even hero less. History based info here.

He snaps. He turns over 10-10 immediately.

We do not hit one out. Stacked.

Next hand, other table......

1L, HJ raise to 6 (we 6 handed).

We are CO, look down at AA. We have approx 400 in chips. HJ has 275.

We 3b to 21.

Folds around to dude in HJ.

He thinks a bit. He 4b to 51.

We sit a few seconds. I know this guy pretty well, play 2/5 with him. No way he is folding any hand he 4b us with.

We jam. He snaps.

Board run out J-T-X-X-X.

We table AA. He says "I was setmining."

Tables T-T FTW.

Then we ran set over set later, and we really were getting pretty good cards a lot of the time before the set over set, but we brick every flop and do sometimes bleed a little here and there because we connect or whatever. A couple instances of this would be flopping OESD+FD and raise flop (no showdown value), bet turn, brick out. Give up.

Then after all that late in the night we are down to 1 table now, we got set over set for 350.

I haven't really updated this thread very often, but I have been basically breaking even entire month of November. Running very very bad.

And December is early yet, but yes still same thing going on.

My mental game is stronger than it used to be, but I actually get depressed sometimes because I just feel like what in the world is going on? I see people at my table just sit down, flop to set and stack 3 people.

I am really trying to maintain a positive outlook, but it's very tough sometimes. I'm starting to wonder is it going to turn around? What can I do to just believe that everything will be better soon?

We are supposed to be positive and believe things will improve. We need to work hard so they can improve.

Could someone please just send me some run good vibes cause I really need them. I'm starting to have a difficult time coping with the stress of the game.

I basically lost almost every single hand in my meetup game. I still had fun, and the others had fun. That's great. But for a 1/2 game I did lose like 4 buy ins (1200 and change). That's the most I've ever lost in a 1/2 but nothing really for 2/5.

I'm glad I had a good meetup game, and people came. It was happy and I never let anyone know the run bad was getting to me. I just took it with a smile.

But it is getting to me a little because of accumulated emotions.

I'm just venting here a little.

I'm trying to work with a guy about my mental game but I'm afraid to keep bothering him and I don't want to whine or anything.

I could certainly use some advice on how to remain positive and keep on keeping on.

Hey all!

I haven't really posted much recently, so I thought I'd make another thread.

I play poker 5 days a week. I play 1/2 and 2/5, more 2/5 lately. I've had lots of practice, feel I play pretty well these days. I'm fortunate enough to be part of a helluva network of players. We all talk hands, strategy, etc.

So lately, I've been running bad intermittently, today really bad. I have built up some thick skin to this, but it's tough.... Here a few hands to ponder today.... I'm not posting them to gripe, just for line check, am I running bad, you know.....

Anyways, hand 1, from memory... Saturday night, Detroit MI:

So, we get Qd-Qx, we are OTB. 2/5 live game, 10 handed. We are probably $500 deep.

2 limpers, we raise it up to $30, SB and EP limper call. We have an active, aggressive image.

Flop 10d-7d-4s. ($90-$95 after rake)

Checks to us, we bet $65, only SB calls (we cover, he has $190 back after calling flop). SB is a player I have a fair amount of hours with. He is a station. He thinks people bluff more than they do, and he hero calls a lot. He is the one who is always frowning and saying "nice hand", and mucking sometimes showing one card for top or 2nd pair. Anyway....

Turn 3c ($225ish)

Dude checks dark.

Now, at this point, I do consider immediately 5-6 as a possibility. However, I feel this guys range is much much wider than the one hand we are totally effed against. I have gotten many calls from him in the past, in similar spots, with top or 2nd pair hands, draws, etc.

I can't see clearly at this point how many chips he has. They are in goofy non standard stacks.

I bet $150, he has $190 and he is all in, we call extra $40.

River 2h. He has 5-6o. We lose. Line check? Should I pot control? This is pretty standard I thought..... It's whatever....

Hand 2: Later in session.

We are about $650-700 deep. We have 9-9, in MP. Table is like animal planet. Loose, whatever.

1 or 2 limpers, there is a whale in the BB. Aggro, volatile spew station. Ego. You know the type....

We raise to $40. Dude in BB only caller. We HU to flop 6-6-2r.

Now, I have been raising, and c betting a fair amount. Last hand we had A-J on JJ9 two clubs, we c bet, he c/R half his stack and folded to our shove (maybe I shouldn't have shoved, it's meh), so anyways, this dude is really trying to gun for us. He has shown proof he is a blaster bluffing away (first inkling was the A-J we had on Jc-9c-Jx, cause i thought if he is C/R he would call shove after he puts in half his stack, and we saw more nonsense from him while waiting to play another hand). I digress.

So, flop 6-6-2r ($85ish). He checks. We bet $60 (we cover). He C/R jams for $475.

I think, cliff notes are "this dude never has 6x, and jams here, he has air and 2x loads, gutters, and ace highs", also thinking "this dude thinks I'm just auto c-betting air here, and he is risking 475 to make me fold", we tank maybe 10-15 seconds. I feel deeply inside I have this guy destroyed, so we call the extra $415.

He visibly squirms, even muttering something illustrating his surprise/unhappiness with being called.

Turn As, river 10s.

Dude rolls over A-3o. Ouch. We do roll our hand as well for some reason. I was kinda shocked how good my read was, huge dog, and just table my hand.

Then, this dude thunder claps about 5 times. He gets up, circles while thunder clapping, then sits back down.

He says something pretty much like (can't recall exact words), "I'm coming for you man! You better get more money, cause I'm gonna take all of it!"

I laugh, and pull out 4 black, and just say "right here bro".

"I am coming for you now man!" "I'm gonna get all those chips too!"

I just LOL again, and tell him "keep doing what you're doin man, it's working!"

I didn't berate him, or tell him what I thought. I was flabbergasted by his outburst and beating his chest and declaring war, after he 3 outers me and get in 100 BB really bad. Ha ha ha, what can you do but laugh? I didn't tilt. I didn't defend blind against his loose opens with rags to get him back. I played poker. If I got a hand to go to war with, fine, but I ain't trying to crack this dude or anything....

Today was tough, as we couldn't make hands, the table was wild wild wild, even after that guy left. There was another guy who sat down and was way crazier than him. So we had to play alot tighter, and just wait for a hand to jam right down the new dudes throat.... but that hand never came. The new blaster went broke after 2 hours, and he left.

We would open good hands occasionally after, but miss flop/give up. Eventually, I did get frustrated. I was stuck $1200, and didn't bring enough with me today. I didn't want to play $300 deep and no re buy, so I left. I usually never get in a game more than $1500. That's about what I had to work with today.

I'm taking the next 2 or 3 days off, gonna play some 1/2 for a little while, and go back to 2/5 again.

I do very well at1/2. 2/5 honestly I have endured some sick beats, in big pots man. I know I've spewed some, but I'm pretty good at not leaking chips (no one is perfect) but I can think right off the top of my head of at least 5 or 6k in suckouts, like nasty nasty ones. This is probably over 400 hours, we way way below ev.

So I keep going back to 1/2, running it over, getting confidence and all that back again, go to 2/5, and I'm kinda having trouble there. I think I am doing the correct things, but like I said, many hands aren't holding.

I think a solid sample live is probably 1000 hours+, and I'm probably around 400 hours. I honestly don't know my hourly rate at 2/5 but it's probably lower than 1/2. I track it, but I don't want to look at it right now. I don't really care until I have a bigger sample. And plus, like I said, getting rivered alot when money is already all in there..... I'm certain I can improve, there's always room to improve, but there is some def run bad in that 400 hours.... anyways.

Any thoughts on any of this post are welcome!

I'm gonna try to post some interesting tidbits, hands, etc from live poker often. I'm gonna try to keep getting better, and I'm hoping you guys can help me learn more....

I'm so unlucky at the cash game that I'll be for a while

So, today....

Was stuck bunches of money.

Won some. +785.

Stayed a long time and finally got in a really really good game to get unstuck.

However, earlier in the night:

We have Ah-4h. 1L, we raise to 25. Limped calls.

HU to flop, limper playing approx 750, we cover.

Flop 4c-9c-2x. Checks.

We bet 45.

EP limper c/r to 100.

I have a long history with this guy. I've seen him do this exact play with top pair many times.

We call 100. Plans of larceny later.

4c-9c-2x, turn 6c.

EP bet 100. Know he doesn't have a flush. He may have one club.

He's getting the business.

We raise to 245. It will leave him around 400 if he calls.

He tanks, calls.

4c-9c-2x-6c......river 3h. Checks.

We bomb it, 500. Looks like he has about 400.

Tanking. Tanking.

he calls. We snap open our hand. He tables Qc-Qx. We lose.

Just about to read this

Cant imagine reading this will do any harm https://upswingpoker.com/downswings-in-poker/

Well there wasn't anything new. Chin up bud you aren't alone.
The last hand you posted was definitely tilted. You said yourself he can check raise with tptk. Well even if hes as weak as that you are basically just crushed and need to give up right there when he check raises. Dont try to bluff v strong ranges and thats what hes representing. Reality check Brian tbh mate it was just total tilt spew.

If you want to chat informally more regularly with winning players you are always welcome to rejoin the hangout.

When I was in it before I couldn't keep up and it was hundreds of messages and I didn't even know how to mute it cause I don't know how to use hangouts that well.

The messages would keep coming up on my phone screen interrupting whatever I was doing.

I would join but I don't have a lot of time to talk lately and I obviously need to learn how to use it.

1. BTN ($850) 5h-4h.

Game loose. 2L, both loose and playing 600 and CO covers.

SB raise to 30, limpers call.

We have plenty of history with SB. He is a lookup artist and he is doesn't play tighter in EP.

We call and close. Flop Kh-Qh-6h. SB check hole cards. SB bet 50, folds to us, we jam 475 eff. Checks his hole cards again, 2nd time now. Tanks.

Calls.

Kh-Qh-6h.........Turn 10h, river X. We show.

SB show Ah-9c. We lose.

We are eating some grub..... 2/5 NL.

Have approx 975.

We told the dealer to deal us out for a minute. He does.

Next hand, auto pilot engages. We are still eating.

Dealer pitches us a couple of cards.

Get cards. Look at them.

We get AA. This is pretty cool.

EP open jams, 85. Folds to us, we call, others fold.

Cards are out, dude tables 9-9. We table as well.

flop Q-Q-5, turn 9, river 7.

We tell dealer once more, deal me out until I'm finished eating.

Yo! Things are going. Putting in a lot of hours. Doing this youtube thing as well.

Poker I'm kind of in a slump but everything else is going well.

Are you gonna be playing poker soon? 3 months off....

Are things going ok with you?

Well I still have my finals for this semester in front of me, In january and start of february, so after that I should have more time to play. I might play duringchristmast a little bit too. But I dont really miss it and I dont want to play when I am not in my full A game. However, other than poker, I am doing great. I am going to the gym regularly, I gained some weight finally and I dumped some of my bad habits, so I did some great improvement overall!
