Tend to agree with vanquish. For most of the reasons he outlined, I quit when my post doc research contract ended - on top of which, in order to be kept on I was told I would have to start lecturing too... yeah rrright, sitting there staring at a bunch of b*stards like you lot for hours on end... I don't think so! No offence intended ;)

I've noticed how poker playing brits are a lot more Americanised than others. Things like sports and politics, I guess it's just exposure to american people and culture.

I'm getting into ice hockey this year (NHL). I do my best to restore the cultural balance by wearing a bowler hat and sipping tea between periods.

"business" is such an ambiguous term when talking about college education. you can do "business" and become an accountant and be guaranteed a job, or you can do "business" and do HR and need 15+ years of exp to get any sort of job whatsoever, or you can do "business" and end up grinding bitcoins or w/e

similar to economics

"i have a degree in economics"
"-oh, how much does the average economist make?"

Vanq, you do not need any sort of business to be an accountant. It offers very little to improve an accountants prospects.

Generally Business Management/Administration is a very valuable degree in terms of employment and salary, and it has pretty much no earnings ceiling for the best graduates. An engineering type degree is great for walking straight into a high paying job.

The main benefits of a business degree aren't the degree itself anyway. It's contacts, internships and if you can do a year abroad then you win life.

in canada you need to pass a series of tests which i believe you need an undergraduate degree for. they'd probably be impossible if you didn't take any business classes in university though

Lazy Link, Im having a hard time explaining myself today so hold a link. The fact is, there are so many "business" degrees out there that it is hard to stand out. You would really need to come from a big name school to have any luck. Contacts/Internships are great but you are competing with thousands of other students for it. Does not help the cause if you are average or go to a good but not great school.

PS, I think the 6th point is the most important of them all.

Rest of the world, you can get chartered without having any college pre-requisite

Actually its not that hard. I am not even fully qualified and I make more than the national average working (assurance) here and it helps to be with a big firm.

Obviously it depends on where you branch off to and it definitely helps to do some extra work after (MBA or something of that nature) but you can do very well for yourself.

Should note that it is personal experience, I am not sure how it is around the world but from what I hear about Caribbean averages etc, it is a lot higher in my field.

Some figs that are based on UK numbers.

Salaries

Graduate starting salary: £18,000 - £28,000

Typical salary (newly qualified): £26,000 - £50,000+ (I believe this is with the minimum 3 years/450 work days)

Typical salary (senior role): £92,300* (outside of Practice) (TBH, this seems rather high)
