Cash games I prefer 6 but tournaments anything. 9 is not a prob in tournaments, sorta know the %s on some hands when 9 handed at least!

Newbie looking at 9-Max vs 6-Max

Hi Folks:
I am a poker newbie and just signed up with the site. I hope to meet good people and in the process, learn and enjoy the game of NLHE. So PLEASE HELP ME OUT.
I am an old timer blackjack card counter. Very straightforward, get the high count, follow betting strategy then playing strategy. Your biggest enemy is ... YOURSELF. The "Psychological Effect of Risk Taking" DOES get to the best of us (blame it on your Anterior Cingulated Cortex). Your second enemy is the Casino. They don't like us lol.
15 years ago I thought I'd better learn Poker in case I get "86" for life. I watched Poker After Dark. I watched celebrity players, like Negreanu and Barry Greenstein, play on pokerstars. I spent a year to learn the game. I could relate. For some reason I didn't trust something. And I was right. Who would have guessed "Jesus" and "the Professor" would clean us out? I would have lost my BR for sure. I never did transfer my skills to LIVE tables.
Pandemic shut down casinos. I thought I'd revisit online poker again.
OMG!!!! What is this? Ranges? Are we playing golf? Exploitative? Sounds like a bully. Polar? Are we in a Zoo playing with bear? 128G of Ram to run Pio?
I am out of my depth. PLEASE HELP!!!
Who asked me to be "Not so Smart"? I guess I will invest 4 years. So far it has been 6 months. I have learned PF ranges/actions; I have learned HUDS and try to stick to 15/12 in VPIP/PFR. I make notes of villains. I study before and after each session. I only play in PokerStars 9-Max 2NL-16NL. Did well except for 3 sessions. Lost everything that I have earned and some. Back to 5NL lol.
I play 9-Max because I heard LIVE poker is softer. My plan is to learn my chops from online and become a regular grinder at the casino. But 6-Max is where most of the players are. I don't want to get used to 6-Max and become a LAG at 9/10-Max LIVE lol. Any suggestion please?
I recently picked up Spin-n-Go. Different perspective. Helps my HU game. Hard to find material/charts for that thou.
Just today I read about Advanced Poker Training. I thought it is different from the rest of the theoretical coaching. Any advice please?
Thank you in advance for your kind input.

I play cash at 6 max tables. In tournaments I prefer to play at 9 max tables.

Personally I think I prefer 6max. Mostly because I had better MTT results at 6max. I consider myself to be a better player with fewer people at the table.

6 max - I can't stand multi-tabling so until I get the hang of that I'm staying with 6 max.

Slouching towards competence. :fight:

As for me, 6-max is more interesting than 9-max games, you play more hands and the game is not so tight, unlike full tables!

I usually play more full ring than 6 max, variation is much higher at 6 max, play is more aggressive, more hands are played than full ring, hand ranges at 6 max are more wide, now if you have a tight budget I do not advise you 6 max, play full ring, but if you have a good bankroll and you like the action 6 max is for you

I prefer longhand because you can hold back, wait for good cards and hardly deviate from the standard way of playing. There is more of a predefined way to play. In shorthand you cannot play wait and see. You have to take action yourself. You have to play with worse hands. It's more dynamic. You have to change your playing style so that your opponent cannot easily see through you. You have to be able to assess your opponents better. It demands a lot more from you than longhand. You need more experience to master it. But it can be more fun as it is more action packed. I would start with longhand and try shorthand sometime later.

Good info. I am a newbie. Started with 9-max only because it will be the same format if I were to play LIVE. Nice to know 6-Max requires more skills. So I didn't do it backward lol.

6 max more fun I think for action. 9 max slower, you gotta play more cautiously.

I am a newbie. Noticed this dude got BANNED. What does a person do to get banned. I don't know the rules. Hate to commit an offense without knowing it. One time I folded a small PP with lots of actions on the table. Flop came 2 more of my PP, I wrote "Damn, I folded QUAD". One person got upset, said I could be banned from the site.

When playing 9 max, the hand range becomes wider but the pot grows accordingly, so I prefer 9 max...

To play live cash I think that 8-Max with the pandemic becomes much more entertaining than 9 or 10 tables as it used to be in the casinos of my country. And to play online I only like 6-Max, the game has greater dynamics and you have more action continuously

I prefer 6-max. The moves are faster and there are fewer opponents playing. The development of the game becomes easier.

More action in 6max, I prefer. But if I play many tables, prefer to have some in 9max, easier.

9 max for. With 6 max you need to be looser as in the blinds much more and starting in middle position. With a full ring it is easier to estimate utg hands of opponents unless very loose where this becomes difficult in 6 max. Also in 6 max to get on the final table you need to survive on one table of three and one of four which is difficult when the blinds are excessive. I think 6 max has more variance.

I like to play 6-max, faster action, I guess that's why. It doesn't matter if I play 6- max or 9-max. Like both combinations. 8-max will also play :)
