Will poker ever really be considered a sport?

In my opinion it will never be, because in a sport the main factor is skill, which is achieved with a lot of discipline and repetition. What doesn't happen in poker ... there is no point in practicing studying, making the right move when the luck factor or "bad luck" has a very high weight on the player's performance. So I find it very hypocritical on the part of people who live on the basis of marketing, to be nurturing dreams, investing time and money in something that doesn’t depend exclusively on technique and performance. of the main characteristics of the "sport" mainly individual. except for some team sports ... but you never say Nadal was champion 3 times but was lucky, Or tennis player was champion against nadal but it was lucky ... Or Nadal was unlucky and got the vice championship. The answer will always be played badly and lost, it wasn't right ended up making mistakes ... So poker has an advantage over the sport, an amateur can become a champion exclusively by luck overnight. And definitely it doesn't happen in any "fair" sport, it is this factor that makes poker so unfair and frustrating.

well luck is one thing and reading people is another thing. I seen live tournament where two people were betting heads up where a girl had full house on flop then she folds the river because a "A" game. The guy did have a AA in his hand lol. So yeah luck if you are playing online its 60-70 % skill and 30% luck but playing in real person the luck percentage is a little lower

yes, I agree live the luck factor is much lower, I saw that hand was AQ full of QQQAA versus full of AAAQQ pair of A in the hand opened on the river the A:D

I doubt that poker will be considered as sport due to the gambling and luck (variance) element that will always be present. I don't think though that we need poker to be considered as sport. What we need is poker to be differentiated from the pure gambling casino games so that we can play with more relaxed regulations and less taxes.

Sport is defined as an athletic activity skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature. It may require skill, but it isn't by any means an athletic activity. It requires absolutely no physical prowess. It is no more a sport than the Scripps Spelling Bee. So will poker ever be considered a sport? In this world, you never know. It's definitely possible.

Maybe if it becomes an olympic event it will. Lot of people consider it a sport already.

And what about chess? it is considered sport and does not require being athletic.

Yes, exactly what I think, hahahahah I wish it were so! And it would only involve chips in the Olympic events with no cash prizes ... it would give players the opportunity to become the best in the world without investing even a penny, just study effort, dedication and skill

interesting your point of view, so you already have what you need from poker?
I just think that regulation as a sport would improve the quality and inspection of online sites for example ... thus allowing the headquarters of poker brands to establish themselves in places where they are not tax havens like Gibraltar, Malta, the Isles of Man, where it has no jurisdiction of any country, which makes proper inspection impossible

Nobody in my vicinity considers chess a 'sport' in any context other than it being a contest. It demands mental skills but no physical skills.

Likewise poker.

By dictionary definition 'sport' can define any activity which people engage in for pleasure or entertainment...but...that is not the way most in contemporary society use the word. As soon as anyone starts potentially attaching it to 'The Olympics' it becomes faintly ludicrous.

If I think of poker in the near future, it will be considered a sport.

Luck can help you but not always.

A couple of years ago, pokerstars hosted a country-level team tournament (American countries only), where four players per country competed in different modalities (HU and sit & go) accumulating team points.

In this way luck will not prevail.

In my opinion, it will be incorporated as a sport in the Olympic Games.

I'm not reading this whole thread. Poker isn't a sport because IT ISN'T A SPORT.

Is traveling by bicycle a bus ride? Even if you start and end at the same place? NO and the reason is because those are 2 different things.

Poker is a game and a competition, which make is similar to a sport. Sports are test and competitions of a physical nature. Poker isn't. Sure you need to sit up for X hours, and stay awake, but that doesn't make it a sport.

I wish whichever pro started saying it was a sport 5-8 years ago hadn't. Its a complete misnomer.

I agree that poker is not a sport. To me it's a game of chance.

There are some who want poker to be considered a mental sport, but I do not think that this can happen at any time, because in poker there is a luck factor, which makes any player who is in his day, can win a tournament .
For example, the sunday million a few months ago, which was won by a player with low limits, and who beat many pros.

No it will not. It takes a huge amount of lobbying for any sport to make it into the Olympic Games with some only admitted temporarily and others removed when losing popularity.

No serious person or body is going to lobby for poker to become an Olympic Sport.

Its not a question of opinion, accordin to IMSA poker is a sport. If you dont think that try to found any sport without the lucky. The chance of a donkey win the wsop is the same chance of anyone go to NBA and get right all the points randonmy.

Not saying that I disagree with you, but we all remember Jesse James Silvia. That dude tried so very hard to bluff his whole stack off so many times. Time after time, he hit two and three outers to suck out when he got picked off. I'm just saying.

According IMSA, the International Mind Sport Association, both chess and poker are considered mind sports. I don't think that a sport and a mind sport are the same thing. They certainly have different definitions.

According to Chess.com, chess is not a sport. So I guess whether poker or chess are sports depend on who you ask. If you ask me, I say that, according the dictionary definition of sport, neither poker nor chess is a sport.

Olympics

I do believe if the Summer Olympics goes back to canada they should make poker their spot sport, they would have a very nice chance to win a gold with the KidPoker.
Off course that I don't if the players would be willing to play without prizes... I do believe that they would do that for the Olympic Golden.

As in any sport in poker, you need skills without which it is impossible to win !!!
If an amateur football team plays with a professional team many times, sooner or later they will win !!! So, because of this, we will consider football a game of luck ???
Have you seen the footballer who scored a goal in the last minute or the reaction of the stands at this time ??? In my opinion, there is much more excitement than in poker (and the main motivation for a football player is the same as in poker players - this is fame and money) !!!
I’m sure that this will happen sooner or later (this is a matter of time) and poker will take its rightful place among other sports !!!

Everyone can play poker, but only disciplined and patient players will be able to achieve a consistently good result. If a player, thanks to luck, becomes a champion in one night, it does not mean that he will continue to have good results. For me, poker is a sport.

It can be in some way considered as a sport. It's a skill game in long term but for short term is all about luck

poker will always be a sport like any, I don't know why there are people who say the opposite, in every sport there will always be the luck factor, because if it were not for that, sports in general would not make sense, luck is soccer, basketball, volleyball , etc
Ability, of course it is important to win and take advantage of your opponents, but I will repeat it again luck will always be present, in poker it is the same ability that makes you win in the long term.
