For me poker is a money game, this is the difference between him and the other games played with cards.
Poker is all about money, the cards are only helping you to get money, or they can cause you a loss of your money.
So, we can say that money is the main subject of poker, the cards are only an instrument!

Good question, You're saying quite subjective opinion, now try to have objective look at things in the poker world.
.
Group 1) Poker players, who are the consumers of the service (game).
Group 2) casinos, Poker clubs and Online poker sites, who are the providers of service.

If you'll think about 1 vs 2, you will find out that all money deposited in the morning will be casinos money by the end of the day. Doesn't matter who wins or loses in Group 1, In general, whole group of players 1) is just a group of losers, while whole group of poker providers, group 2) is a group of winners.

Cards are not instrument, the reason why people keep playing is called "serotonin". People keep depositing money and play poker just because it's simple and fast way to create hormonal boost in their organism. Mathematical theories, calculations and so on - it's just a cheap explanation to keep players in shape, in general all poker courses, lessons and books are saying the same thing "Just keep playing". Those who constantly win must be advertised by poker providers, because such advertisement works the same way like if you're watching a movie. What happens? You associate yourself with main characters in the movie... the same thing happens when you start to associate yourself with some poker professional. It's the instrument of pulling money out of your pocket.

Objectively - there is no difference for the computer servers of online poker providers when they're hosting a 1000 player freeroll VS 1000 player $1.1 buy-in MTT VSs 1000 player $109buy-in MTT. But difference in rake taken is huge... Instead of capping any MTT rake to maximum $1, they're charging like 5-10%. Why? SO they can pay Ronaldo, Neymar, UFC stars and some other people who have their own fan clubs, so that part of the fan club will deposit money and start playing poker like their beloved star does...

SO

Yep, poker is a money game lol, it's "your money going to someones wallet" game. LOL Even if You're in 1-5% of constantly winning players, still you're constantly doing damage to yourself, until maybe you become good enough to at least start travelling to live poker MTTs to see the world.

Being absolutely objective, let's imagine that an alien comes to the planet and this alien will look at the individual who plays poker for living - what will this alien see? Huge % of humans life well wasted for sitting and observing pixels at the screen that represent circulation of 52 cards? Life isn't a never ending process you know, and it's better to earn money by providing service or item to the society instead of trying to earn money in someones service. Create your own system, instead of using someones. Can you spend your lifetime with a better use than just observing same 52 cards again and again? Life is so short... just think about it! 100 year life is 24*365*100 = 876000 hours, 30% is sleep time, some time has passed already, will you live to 100 years? food, toilet, even brushing your teeth will consume a lot of time in the long run... How much time is left? What % of what's left will you spend for poker and will it help your personal progress?

in any sport we need a way to keep score for cash poker money is the way. in tournament the winning sometimes is more important than the final prize.
so in my opinion poker is a mind sport and in cash , money is the way we score.

poker's a card game that you can make money with. there are some who play poker literally for fun with nothing at stake, not even pride, so it's a card game first and foremost. most of us here just happen to play this card game for money

For me it's a bit of both. Definitely a card game because of, Well you know... cards

However I've noticed that unless there's money on the line or there's a prize pool at stake, people simply don't play poker how it was meant to be played. They make needlessly stupid decisions that they'd rethink if there was money to be made.

I believe that any game that you play in hopes for a financial gain is a money game. Poker just so happens to be played with cards but still a money game.

If that's how you see poker, then I would like to suggest you a much safer and fruitful way of making money: a job. You don't need cards as an instrument to make money, you can just use your head and your two hands. If you work, not only you get money (actually you are guaranteed to get a certain amount of money), but also contribute to society, think about it, you could work in healthcare, be a firefighter, a teacher, a garbage man. Playing poker just for the money is simply a waste of energy, in my opinion even the majority of poker pros started to play the game for recreational purposes and liked the game so much they decided to make a living out of it. Poker was designed as a card game, and casinos adopted it as a way to generate money aka rake in exchange for entertainment. Casinos, both brick and mortar and online, don't cater to the pros, they just tolerate the pros because they can't really discriminate against them. Casinos cater to recreational players who consider a loss of money the price to pay for having fun. Winning at a casino is just a gimmick, in reality players have the odds stacked against them, in poker because of the rake. Yes, some people (a select few) can make a living by playing poker, but they have to put in a lot of hours of play and study in order to stay profitable besides being talented which is a prerequisite, the reason they are capable of doing that is their love for the game, because you have to love what you are doing in order to achieve mastery in anything, and mastery is a must in poker unlike most of the other professions. In poker you can't be average and make money simply because the average player is a losing one. The top pros say they don't even think about the money when they make decisions at the poker table, it's like they play for chips with no value.

Poker is a card game, it is up to you to decide if you want to bet money, if you just want to play poker with your friends for fun you can but if you want to give the game some more excitement a cash bet makes it more interesting.

For me, poker is to gain in the form of money. Everyone has their own interests in poker. Some want to have fame and whatever everyone knows, others just need adrenaline and they are not interested in money, someone wants to win a lot of money and get rich richly. But I don’t need much.

This is the very reason why I am taking a break from poker and thinking of restructuring my playing time. I have noticed that the time put in does not render as much as a proper side business. For fun its great but as another stream of side income - not so in most cases.

There is no doubt that poker is a card game, but a game for money or for conditional chips is an individual choice of each player !!! I played poker for about 7 years on conditional chips for entertainment on social networks, and when I started playing for money, the game did not become uninteresting or more interesting - it only changed that it became more difficult to win)))

I disagree with you. Poker is a card game for money. And in my opinion, the main thing in this game is not the cards, not the money, but the player.

Poker is about who believes they are going to win the pot. You don't have to have the best cards, you just have to have to be correct in your belief of whether you are taking the pot or not.

There's a lot of insightful opinions listed in this thread. I would just like to add that poker is not the only card-game in which winning $ is the driving factor to win. It's certainly the most entertaining. I remember a while back when they actually televised blackjack trny's. In a word: BORING. Needless to say they did not last.
I might also add that in this day and age people want compensation for their time. I can't remember if I had stated it before but there was a commercial about 25 yrs ago for an investment firm (not sure which one) that featured a guy in a suit w/a briefcase walking around Wall Street pitching lines for his company. The one that stood out the most, to me, was his ending statement, "In my line of work time is money. Thanks for your time."
Shuffle up and deal, brothers and sisters. :icon_pira
