Other than boredom, for what reason tournaments better than cash games?

I would say cash games are better if you are not to greedy that being said but people like me are greedy and stay way to long on the table.

And tournaments you get to play for a long time and win good money if you get to the final table and that for me is not that easy.

And in saying this i like tournaments because i am playing for fun so i play them so i can play for a while

Different play styles between tournaments and cash games. When playing tournaments, you have to be able to play with short stacks(10-20BB) and big stacks. When play cash games, it's always advised to play with big stacks which lets you play looser than if you were in a tournament(You can play more suited connectors, mine more sets with pocket pairs, etc.). Their is also the difference in the all in factor, in tournaments it's not really advised to go all-in too often before hitting the money as with variance, you will quickly find yourself loosing some no matter how well you read your opponent(And thus losing the entire tournament). In cash games, if you are ahead of your opponent by 1% and you know you can get them to put all of their money in the pot, it's advised to do it as over time it will be a "winning" move. I also tend to feel like tournaments are won more from preflop actions(knowing when to 3bet, knowing when to steal blinds, etc.), if you want to win in cash games, you have to be able to play post flop.

Good advice. I agree. Two different games. Good all-in advice. Now if I can only shake the leak. Getting there. Good luck with your games.

the feeling of running deep, reaching the final table and winning a mtt is different than winning a big pot playing cash games.

Cash = play TAG get cash in the middle when you have the best of it.
Tournament = play LAG, take chances, have fun, get paid when you make final table.

I like both...

You can play a lot of hands for little or no investment and occasionally get a decent payout in a tournament versus cash.

I like tournaments better because they feel like they are more fair and reasonable. Players are randomly seated so to me it feels like it's harder for someone to cheat. In the cash game I don't know who is working against me or if there are friends playing the same table to get an advantage.

I feel better in tournaments. They may take long but it is low risk high reward. In cash games is where I lose my bankroll most times.

Indeed! If by a side, the cashgame you have more freedom to play without having to wait for the beginning of the tournament, for another side, it is also a riskier game. I think if there was an option limiting players by status level, maybe we could take better advantage of the cashgame format.

I prefer playing mtt compared to cash as I like the challenge of trying to beat a field of hundreds or thousands to get the win, I would get a lot bigger buzz and enjoyment from that win than winning maybe double that amount in a cash session.

Hello.
For me, no doubt it is better to play tournaments. In cash games, I always lose money. In the tournaments, I have at least some chance to win.

I like both. I personally think it is like comparing apples and oranges.

Cash games are more personal. I normally see the same people at the same table for 2 or 3 hours where in a tourney I seem to switch tables alot especially early i the tourney.

I used to believe cash games were more profitable. For example in a microstakes .5/1 nlh you could sit down at a table and triple your buyin then leave maybe spend 30 min to an hour depending on your.run of cards. Whereas a $10 freeroll you are looking at least 3 hours and maybe getting itm and winning something like $2.50 but nothing close to that cash game. Obviously if you go out in that tourney you lose nothing but in the cash game you lose money.

Im more of a recreational player meaning I dont play poker for a living. I have a full time job, wife and kids, and other obligations.

If I have time for a tourney I will play in it. If I dont then I find a cash table.

As many on this forum know, I am a major advocate on cash games being the better option for profiting from poker because the variance is always equally brutal whereas in tournaments variance punishes much more brutally in the ending than the beginning making it very unfair of your good hands game earlier on in the tournament rather than later.

Anyway, I am now doing the reverse of my Modus Operandi; instead of a rant-post supporting cash games, I'm offering people to attack cash games and defend tournaments as their chosen style of poker and I will decimate the arguments one by one to truly prove to you how much worse tournaments are for your overall profit from poker no matter how smart you are at them.
Touraments you can lose a one time entry fee.
Cash games you can lose a big part or all your cash,
if you are having a bad day.

More money if you win. But boredem wise I am the other way around. Cash I can leave 2-3 hours in. Tournament I can get bored 2 -3 hours in.And feel like I am going to get a cooler hand or unlucky 4 - 5 hours in thus being a waste of time. They don't seem to happen as much in cash.

Best type

Tournaments are not better or worse than cash games. They are different animals. Same genus, different species (It seems fairly accurate to push the biology allusion that far). Ten years ago, when I played semi-pro on full tilt poker, I played mostly NL SnG tourneys -- had my best results that way.

Unfortunately playing cash games with pennies BB will lend for players to be very loose. In reality we pay 5$ for cup of coffee but when a player bets .50 cents on the river we are suppose to be scared and fold? There is no real threat in cash games unless you are playing in big tables and you have something to loss. I rather play tournaments I know I will be playing for a while there is a set number I can loss and if I do win there will be somewhat of a big payout.

Equal Ground

I like tournaments better than cash games because every player starts with equal amount of chips, whereas on a cash table a player can sit down with the minimum to find a player who has been banking cash for hours and holding way more. This then allows the player with more money to bully the poor players lol.

Tournaments come to an end and they tell you to leave....lol

Cash games you can sit there for days. Ever leave a poker room and you come back one or even two days later and a player is sitting at the same table in the same seat and he looks exhausted ? LOL

Good luck !

It's up to the individuals mindset to be better at cash or mtt.
Speaking of online poker, most of the players who are cash game long term winners use hud's to study their opponents, while mtt winners rely on their individual reads and intuitions.
Take away the hud from the cash players and put them together on a table with mtt players, who do you think would do better?
But there are also players who don't use hud's in cash games and are profitable, those players probably do better in mtt's compared to hud users.
Overall if you enjoy the real art of online poker, play mtt's.
I myself am enjoying it, the pride of getting to the final table is priceless.
an average cash game player is always better than average tournament player a hud really is of no use unless you are playing more than 4 tables and mtt palyers also use huds

I'm more tournaments than cash games. At the beginning of the tournament, all are equal and those who play well come to the finish line, and cash game plays much the bank and the more the better to intimidate those who have a small pot
