Freeroll Strategy

I have found that as much fun as free rolls can be, they have to be played somewhat differently than $$$ buy ins. The large number of all inners playing freerolls makes it difficult to play the Tight-Aggressive style because invariably you'll catch a monster, bet your 3X BB and a donk will go all in you'll call and sure enough the 34 offsuit catches 2 pair...happens a lot, also 3 betting is dangerous as again you'll get the all inners. Don't get me wrong free rolls are fun but the strategy, in my point of view, is more of Tight, Passives and wait for opportunities, No bluffing...Just enjoy:):):)

I also believe that freerolls damage our game. Still there are more pros than cons to play them :) But also from my experience most of the players in $1-$33 mtts and nl2-nl10 cash games are much weaker than average Cardschat freerolls player :) And there are more reasonable good players in low limit sit and go games.

totally. the only thing damaging my game is when i play like an idiot. which is 40% of the time probably

Haha! Seems we are on the same page here, MrAlabama! Seems like often enough I ask myself, “why did I do that” after a hand!

But as long as we recognize that, I guess we are probably improving!

it definitely harms my game and psychological state. This is understandable, you will see few adequate actions from opponents and dispersion due to the large number of players is large

If you play freeroll you play it in a different way but dont forget you just play a freeroll and not a noraml game so dont let yourself implement that strategy to normal buyin poker tournaments.

I know freerolls are incredibly popular among recreational and beginning level players. They're commonly viewed as a risk free way of building up a bankroll. A chance to develop your poker skills without worrying about losing the shirt off your back. Most of us got our introduction to online poker by playing exclusively in these type of games. After playing dozens if not hundreds of them the majority of players have yet to build even a modest bankroll. I don't view that as a issue but what I believe is happening is that these freerolls are hindering most people from becoming good poker players and preventing them from ever being able to build a bankroll in the future. We call it real poker but the truth is that freerolls are played much the same as play money poker is and they bare little to no resemblance to the tournaments that require buyins. I large number of the people playing the freerolls have little interest in actually playing or even learning how to play poker. Because of that the games are overwhelmed by bad poker play. So much so that many of the things considered poker no-no's are done so regularly that you begin to think they're how your supposed to play. In freerolls almost every hand starts with a open limp followed by five or six more players limping behind. No one seems to know how to size a bet they limp unless they got ace-anything then they panic shove all in. The flop comes and followed by the inevitable donk bets. If a player makes top pair you can almost count on them snap shoving all in and then hoping someone with a middle pair is dumb enough to call which they often are. When a player looses a decent size pot it's a safe bet that the next 3 or 4 hands they'll be shoving all in preflop as they try and shake the tilt off. If you don't know any better you would just assume that this is how poker is played but against a table full of average or better players you'll be laughed roff the table right after they've taken all your chips. I honestly think freerolls teach people how to be bad poker players. If a person's ambition is becoming a good player then it would be wise of them to stay away from freerolls altogether

I do not agree with you, you are right only in one thing that many of those who participate in freerolls have little interest in playing or even learning to play poker. Because of this, games are overloaded with a bad poker game. For you - it learns to be on top in any situations. As one great said: studying, studying and studying again

I think freerolls will affect your game that's just a fact but it's an awesome learning ground, no stakes but pure competition, I think esp the cardschat daily freerolls will test you & prepare you for small stakes tournaments & as long as you adjust your game b/n freerolls & the stakes you usually play you should be fine!

Usually, in freeroll games we meet players who play only because it is free. They have a chaotic game ... "lottery". But I don't think this could affect our game when we are at a table with $ 50,100 registration.

I played last nights all members freeroll last night for the first time (new member) and I loved it. I decided to treat it like a proper tournament rather than doing stupid shit. I hit the final table after 5 hours and afterwards I'm not upset that I finished 7th but annoyed that I didn't take freerolls seriously before. Training is training and I learnt so much about myself last night.

I only play freerolls. And yes... i can see some bad plays there. I lost much nice hands to a nine and two... this guys can call a all in whith no cards... and many times i lose. I believe in tournaments with buy-in must have more wise players.

Are freerolls damaging your poker game

I don't think so. They are a good way of learning different concepts and (trying) to adapt the players. But of course, you shouldn't think if you are (very) succesful in freerolls that you can crush the high(er) stakes. ;)

I totally agree with what you described. I play freerolls a lot and see how badly it affects me. You can get so used to this "bingo" style of play that you already play this style in paid tournaments as well. This has the direct consequence of losing the game.
I always advise beginners they can to start on freerolls, but only as long as they know the game and then move on to the pay game as soon as possible. Although, in my experience, this style of play still prevails in micro-stakes tournaments.
