I always like playing the first hand of a tournament.

You can't win every hand if you don't win the first one!

But I have a friend who is superstitious and mucks the first hand without looking at the cards.

He says that he can't bet enough to motivate folds from players during the very first hand. Everybody wants to play.

And sometimes he doesn't even play one hand until after the first break.

What do you think?

Does it bother you that there are so many limpers the first hand?

Do you adjust your game? How?

I don't play first tournament's hand every time. It sounds like some strange in my opinion. I prefer play if my cards are good enough.

I do not believe in superstition and don't use it in my everyday life and activities. Therefore, I never ever noticed what happens during the first hand of a tournament. I play every tournament from the very first hand, but if your question refers to whether I all in any two cards and cross my fingers in the very first hand, then no, I don't care and no rational human being who wants to make poker profitable would do this. Unless it's Aces or Kings, that is.

Sometimes I do! But I usually don't as I often entered the tourney late.
For me it doesn't matter! You can have a great start but often times you still lose!

It all depends on the pocket cards and my position at the table. I am not superstitious and if I have strong enough cards, I am ready to take risks regardless of the stage of the tournament.

I just play my normal game in the first hand, but since I have no reads on anyone, and the HUD has not yet popped up, I might try to pot control a bit more or bail out of marginal spots. You cant win a tournament in the first hand, but you can lose it ;)

Unfortunately, this is mostly a superstition. Even if you might do well in the first few hands, it will add next to nothing to your ROI.

There's never no point of NOT playing the very first hand cause that way you can easily steal chips from players who are most likely  but havent gone to sit out mode yet ...

I hear this for the first time:D If the map is good, I play regardless of the time of the tournament! Moreover, what's the point of paying a buy-in and sitting in a sit-out until the break, when your stack will decrease the blinds every round.

Going all in is a good strategy in the first hand because if you lose then you can do something else

honestly the beginning of a tournament for me is the most dangerous and complex place to play a hand.
Huge losses and low rewards.
I prefer to limp too and see if I can find a monster out there.;););)

I think these are very bad thoughts from a friend, try to tell him that it's wrong to think so. If you think so, then it's better not to play poker at all after registration:LOL:

I can understand having a goal of playing every hand perfectly, unattainable of course, but winning every hand?

I think, this happen more commonly with the first hand after a break. And to be honest I am regularly one of those players, who dont make it back in time ;)

Depends on standard considerations, I'll play aggressively if strong enough or in a position to do so. (y)
