Villian Stats (VPIP/PFR/AF): 37/20/4.1

This hand is from a league game with a crew with whom I play every week. For the most part, the skill level is fairly high.

League NLHE MTT

Hero - T/A, VPI 17, PFR 13, AF 2.2

Villain - L/A, steals a lot, bluffs a lot, wide range OTB and CO. VPI 37, PFR 20, AF 4.1

Blinds 20/40 (early stages)

Hero's and villain's effective stacks approximately the same, close to starting stack of 3000.

Hero in MP with JJ raises to 130. Villain in BB calls.

Flop comes wet with 8c 9c 6h.

Villain bets 240.

Now what?

Here is how the hand played out.

It'd be great if you could analyze my play street by street, as I'm trying to repair the leaks in my tournament play. I'm primarily a tight player (maybe too tight), but I'm working on opening up.

Thanks!

After the flop, I would reraise. Reraise the size of the pot so a hand drawing to a straight or a flush. He could have plenty of calling hands seeing he was the BB and he had great calling odds.

After the turn: Bet more on the turn, 135 into a pot of 890? The implied odds of someone with a gut shot draw still has the right idea to call that.

River: I'm surprised that he didn't call, the pot was offering him 11-3. But I guess if you were trying to get value out of him this was about the right size.

Skip the FPS play and bet a reasonable amount on the turn. Sure, you get a few chips when he calls and still loses with hands that would have folded to a proper bet, but you don't get the larger amount he'd put in when he has or thinks he has enough to call more.

When he's willing to call two streets, you give up even more value because your small turn size leads to a smaller river bet.

Plus your small turn bet size gives good odds to any draws, which can be costly when they hit.

I believe you played the flop well, on the turn I probably would have made a half size pot bet.. not sure if he would have called and eventually if it made it to the river i would have made another half size pot bet! Now obviously you were trying to get some value out of your hand and that was a pretty scary flop! Usually with just about anything I will call a bet if its under half size of the pot because it shows weakness, some cases I will even raise regardless of what im holding!

Hey guys,

At the time I was thinking that he was betting air and because of my table image, he knew that he had been caught, so I was trying to value bet him.

You're right in the above analyses; he could have easily fallen into a hand and I was pricing him right in with my low bet on the turn.

I appreciate the feedback and the tips!
