So my question here is, should I have shoved earlier on in the hand, I pegged him on a flush draw and he sucked me out, bad.

Should I have noticed his shove, or taken it as a bluff?

Standard, sucks he hit the backdoor draw, but that's poker. You could maybe bet the flop larger & shove the turn, since that awkward stack size gives him decent implied odds to draw to the river. But he was calling anyways.

Bet sizing could have been different here. As c9 said, bet pot on the turn and shove the flop or you could try betting smaller, giving him better odds to chase but knowing that you can get away from it, even on the river.

If we raised 2.5xbb pre flop the pot would be 16000. Bet half pot on the flop and the pot is 32000 on the turn. Half pot again on the turn and the pot is 64000, or even check it back if you are fairly sure he will keep chasing and the pot is still 32000. If the river comes a blank we can bet again or if it fills the draws we can check it back, call a small bet or fold to a shove.

This way, by the river we have not invested two thirds of our stack against a calling station with just top pair.

One of the biggest things that people miss at the later stages of tournaments is practicing pot control. We must remember that top pair is not the greatest hand and ask yourself if you are willing to play for your whole stack with it?
