generally, I assume an unknown player is raising me for value until I have reason to believe otherwise.
so, if I don't know this guy, I ask myself how do I feel against a typical player's value 3-bet range?
with 99 I'll say he will almost never have a smaller pair
It will usually be 2 overcards
It will often be a bigger pair
It will occasionally be a wacky
bluff or just 1 over
let's say 15% of the time he has a smaller pair (80% to win) = 12%
equity
50% of the time you are facing 2 overs (50% to win) = 25% equity
30% of the time you are facing a bigger pocket pair (20% to win) = 6% equity
5% of the time it's some wacky hand with 1 overcard (70% to win) =3.5% equity
so your equity against this random player's range would be roughly 46.5%
without great
pot odds, I'm thinking fold here. I like to avoid flips because
#1 I think I'm better than most of my opponents (I'm not awesome, I just play small stakes)
#2 you're only
hoping to flip, you could be crushed
#3 Your stack size doesn't need a double up or a flip right now.
#4 There is a high likelihood you'll need to flip later and when that time comes I'd rather be holding the AK when I call the all in and holding 99 when I'm the one who shoves.
