IMHO

OK, trying not to hi-jack this thread, but I'm curious. To go along with my article on "Verbal Abuse In Online Poker", I'd like to know some opinions on the severity of some non-cuss words. On a scale of 1-5 (1=harmless, 5=person should get the boot), what do you think of the following words:

Moron

Gay

Idiot

Donkey

Dumbass

ATM

Fag

Bitch

I would give them all about a 2. It's all inappropriate, really. The one I resent more and would give a 5 is 'bitch'. A word like 'c*nt' deserves a 10, and I've been called that more at online poker tables than anywhere else before in my life. I don't know if ill-mannered people think they can put you on tilt with comments like that, but in my case it only makes me focus in on them as someone with very little self-control, and makes me target their chip stack specifically.

Oh dear Holli, I've never seen anything that bad. You could start playing at pokerstars since they seem to have a stringent no-swearing policy and detection. Don't play at PokerRoom since they don't seem to have any sort of language filter at all.

From a girl's point of view, the absolute worst thing u can call her is a "c*nt". I'm not sure just where along the line chivalry died, but in the online poker world, it seems to have done a complete 180. I seem to get much more abuse at the tables simply because I'm a female. Other players seem to think that my gender gives them free rein to tell me I'm probably ugly and weigh 400 lb., that I'm a ho, or a 'biatch', the list goes on. I don't see male players catching the same kind of abuse. I will admit that being an attractive female can be an advantage in live play, but online it's anything but. Can anyone help me understand why this is?

I think as a female I can relate more. Some men simply can not stand to be beat by a woman - I have heard all of those same things. We wound their pride and they attack in the only way they know how.

Thankfully most men are respectful - it is only a few whom are not.

Everyone complains about chat-bans on pokerstars. If you mind to your own, or turn off your chat you won't have this issue. If you like to talk to make the game more interesting and have a little fun, you can do so without using flagrant words. Ex.) Gay, Moron, Idiot, Retard, Dumbass... etc.

You guys know what words are appropriate and what aren't. Just don't use them and there will be no problem

Yes. It's really just that simple. Instead of referring to people as morons, try using their nickname. "why do you think FP called" is better than "why do you think that moron called". Or if it's completely unavoidable to use a derogatory term about another player, consider not writing anything at all. If you don't even have the self control not to type stuff into the chat box, I don't see how you can be a good poker player.

The reason Hellmuth is a winning player despite lacking any form of self control when it comes to temper is that he has learned the art of sitting out while he cools off. Tiltmonkeys start trying to punish the player they're upset with. Smart.

What really gets to me is when people complain that their "freedom of speech" is being violated because they can't call people whatever they want in PokerStars chat. Bwahahahaha!

all or nothing. 'bitch' ranks the same as 'c***' and all of that other 'shit' in my book. (i hope i dont get -rep for that, being as im referencing to it the exact same way she referenced to 'bitch' - and not calling anyone it. i do dislike the word, but i cannot discount anyone's right to use it just like i use 'moron' and 'ass pirate' and the like)

All,

If this topic is just going to be used as an excuse for people to post offensive words, I'm just going to close it. First and last warning.

Ta.

dude if youre gonna censor one you should be censoring them all. im not using this as 'an excuse to post offensive words' because i've made it clear that i believe they are all offensive. just because 'bitch' ranks lower doesnt mean it shouldn't be censored too ;/

Well tbh I'm just gonna lock this anyway seeing as it's gone way off topic and people seem to be using it as their own little individual cuss-thread.
