I would suggest formatting and reinstalling windows on your computer.

The problem will be something to do with your own computer rather than the FT software. The problem is that you are never going to get what is wrong with your machine correctly diagnosed via email.

A complete reinstall would reset everything back to what its supposed to be and would be virtually guaranteed to resolve this issue. (if you think about it, if 50 thousand people are fine and 3 are having issues, would you say the problem is the software or the configuration of those 3 machines?)

It should only take you 2 - 3 hours to reinstall the OS and all your programs.. its a pain.. but its going to resolve your problem.

I see what you're saying but this is being installed on a brand new laptop.

Even so I can virtually guarantee its a problem with your laptop rather than a bug in the software that effects you and 4 others in the world!

You have tried the obvious fixes, its time to bite the bullet and reinstall from scratch.

I never suggested it was a bug in the software - the help I've received from FTP has been to make changes to my sysytem. I'm fully aware where the problem lies, it's just that I don't know what it is. As for reinstaiing to a (literally) brand new machine, I don't think that will do anything.

Trust me, 10 years of working in IT and I'm telling you that the quickest and easiest solution to your problem is a complete reinstall.

OK, I'll try it. Wouldn't this just revert it to factory settings?

Yes.. but dont do it from a restore CD.. otherwise the chances are it will perform as it does now. The exception being unless you installed programs prior to the poker software and it is one of those particular programs causing he issue.

What I am suggesting is to format and reload.. so install windows and then each piece of software individualy.

My preference would be to install windows, followed by the antivirus, followed by the poker software.. confirm it works and then install each of the subsiquate programs, checking the poker software works after each.

The problem is likely that there is some option or conflict or whatever that has occured from how the machine was originality installed.

Saying that.. the restore CD option would be quicker, so it might be worth trying that first, seeing if anything changes and then if not, going the whole hog and reloading it from scratch.

Reinstaling is not that daunting. Just get the motherboard, garphics card, sound card and network card drivers off the internet first (if you are unsure what modle they are, they will be physically printed on them.
Then install windows, then the drivers you have already downloaded and then each of the programs.

TBH there will probably be things that were bundled with your machine that you wont be able to find.. the thing to keep in mind is most of these programs are rubbish and you really dont need them anyway.

You can reinstall in under 3 hours quite easily, under 2 if you have the drivers already on a CD.

Not downloading it to the default location? Or do you mean not installing it in the default location? You can download the software to wherever you want, wouldn't change a thing. I can see installing to a custom folder causing a problem, but it shouldn't and that would be a problem in their software. I would definitely email them and tell them how you fixed it, because you should be able to install the software where ever you want.

Were you trying to put your program files on a separate partition to the OS?

If so.. dont

Data is fine to have on a separate partition to the OS

But putting programs on a seperat parttition will slow the machine down, cause problems where the program has defaults to the OS partition and usually people do this with the mistaken belief that if they reinstall the OS they wont loose their programs. Due to the way the registry works, they will still have to reinstall all programs should they have to reinstall the OS.

So definitely put data on a separate partition, but dont try installing programs on a separate partition, there just isn't any point.

Glad to hear it. How did you finally figure that out??? Did you even bother with the reinstall? That sounded like a headache.

I recently bought a new laptop. Never worked with Vista, but with Windows 7, there is a 'program files' and 'program files/x86'. I've tried to change the default location, and it won't let you - you get an error message. All but 1 of the poker clients goes into x86. I think UB is the only one that defaulted to its own new folder called 'poker application. Strange. But now I never touch the default location. It always knows where it wants to go, far be it from me to argue.

thats because the program files x86 folder denotes a 32bit program and the programs file denotes a 64 bit program.

Thanks. Knew it was something like that. The 'program files' folder contains all the new stuff that came with the computer plus Symantec, who I had to call & they walked me through loading my 2009 Internet Security on the new 64-bit. Still amazing to me though how the client software recognizes your system, and knows where to put stuff.

Its because there are certain agreed commands (dos stuff) that allows a program to "ask" where things go.

so instead of installing to c:\program files\etc

it will install to %program files%\etc

The computer always knows that when it sees %standard name% it fills it in with the appropriate file location. i.e c:\program files

%program files% isn't a real one.. I just made it up.

They are called environment variables and there are real ones such as

%username%
%windir%
%TMP%

and so on.

Yeah, I had a similar problem but my problem was with the disappeared login buttons.
The problem was that I downloaded it in a directory (not default), and name of this directory contained hungarian characters...that caused these strange bugs.
Unfortunatelly I havent read this thread before so I couldnt help you.

OMG somebody is actually old enough to know what DOS is.

Once in an effort to be a smartass with a player who was giving me a problem i typed in the chat.

cd\players name
c:\playersname\del*.*

Wasn't sure if that was correct but it didn't matter..nobody had a clue.

The folder I was installing the software to was on the same partition - just not the default Program Files location...

Well, it's irrelevant why I did. It makes no sense that it would cause a problem though.

Granted it shouldn't make any difference.

I am just genuinely interested as to why.

I work with computers 24/7 and often cannot fathom why my users do certain things.

So I am always interested when someone does something strange. I'm trying to figure out what, in their mind, they were trying to achieve.

OK I see.

It's merely because my laptop is shared between myself and my girlfriend so it’s easier sometimes if lots of programs are being installed and date save that we have our own separate place to save stuff. Therefore I have my own folder that contains all my poker stuff so I installed FTP thinking it would be fine.
