Tragic and very sad!
Without knowing the details of this players life it would appear that he had a gambling addiction that developed to the point where the only way he could see out, was to end his life. Gambling addictions can affect people within every community and the poker community is one of those that will unfortunately find individuals who fall into addiction.
I used to play at a venue where there was a chap who played every game going, you could never push him off a hand and he never folded to anything, eventually running out of money, his marriage and his home! We've probably all seen or heard about someone like this. Sure a few people suggested to the management that he needed some help and the odd individual tried to address this with him, although none of this worked!
We all need to encourage responsible gambling within poker, and as has been alluded to already in this thread, we the poker community i.e. the facilitators of poker and its players should probably do more to address the addiction situation within our game.
Lastly from me on this, I don't think these situations should be mocked, but rather that empathy for addicts should be shown by all the poker community as indeed it has largely been here!
