I know that a lot of us have full time jobs etc, and when we get home in the evening cant wait for a quick fix of poker until bed time and the next day of earning a living...But:-Do you think that playing poker online is anti-social or do you try to talk to your wife?

It all depends on your attitude to poker . If you treat it as a job, then of course the limited time will interfere and then you need to redraw the plans . But if you treat it as a weekend hobby, then this is a completely different approach .:jd4::jd4:

I was introduced to poker (primarily online poker) by a friend I originally met playing computer games online. Eventually we met up in real life for a night out - pub then casino for some poker.

Doesn't sound anti-social to me!

I don’t think it’s really anti-social. Yes, it takes a lot of time to play, here you need to maintain a balance between playing and communicating with people.

I have started to feel that by playing poker online I am becoming antisocial and is a big issue for me. I dont want to be disturbed and playing takes alot of time.

Anyways, balance is the key and I am working on it

I suppose to some degree it can be anti-social, and that is why most people prefer Live games to on-line poker. I ran a weekly game at my local pub and preferred playing there to playing at home on my computer.
The whole atmosphere of playing among friends and talking about other things besides poker was a refreshing change, and something I looked forward to every week, meeting up with new face's occasionally, and making new friends along the way.
On-line you are playing against a player's favorite dog, cat or anything they post as their avatar, and to made up names, which have a meaning only to themselves. It is possible to make some friend's on-line, I made a few on-line from America before pokerstars was banned there, although I would probably never meet them face to face, but we did have conversations between hands.
During the lock-downs, on-line Poker became a godsend, but I still miss the weekly Live games and cannot wait to get back to them.

When the fun Stops, STOP!

The main thing is not to overdo it by playing online. This is not only time consuming but also counterproductive. You can get tired of the game.

Poker is definitely an introverted hobby, its not a team sport, it is an individual game.

Nobody really cares when we win or lose, except our closest family members and even they may not care very much. :)

But its nice to have a group of poker friends and be able to talk about the game with them. Since I don't know anybody in "real life" that is as passionate about poker as I am, that's why I come to the internet for places like Cardschat and also I spend many hours on Twitch poker streams which are obviously filled with poker players and people who enjoy watching the game. That satisfies my need to converse about poker with people who are truly interested in the game.

But mostly, when we are actually playing poker, we are playing entirely alone, and if you want to call that anti-social I guess you wouldnt be wrong, but it's not like we're TRYING to be anti-social, it's just the nature of the game.

As far as jobs/hobbies go yeah, I think Poker is definitely one of the most non-social ones. It doesn't mean that if you are a Poker player you will automatically be anti-social, but it probably will mean that you're not gonna get the social interaction playing poker that you could get doing something like playing in a band, or playing a team sport etc.

Many poker players like Negreanu are very sociable people. Therefore, not to say that poker is antisocial

When I played live I met at least 5 new people everyday and there was always a conversation at the tables.

Online can't compare but doesn't mean you have to be antisocial just find a chatroom online while playing or better yet you could always meet new people and make friends on the worlds largest poker forum Cardschat.com!!!!!

When I play online poker I do my job and focus on the game. I don't talk to players because I don't want to.

I find online poker very different to live poker in this respect. Also live you not playing multiple tables so it is easier to chat if you want. But tournaments are very time consuming and it can reduce socialising if you do not balance it well.

It depends on the situation, if it is a person who bothers to play in public then it would be considered antisocial, but if it is as it is currently being presented for pandemic reasons it would be more like a gambling option.

antisocial is hard to judge:

-some people dont like mingling with people hence play online.
-some people play online to cut time since they have some tighter schedule like 10 hour shift next day

Depends on how you interact with others.
Just cause someone is playing online doesn't mean he/she is anti social. If you are friendly, you can maintain your online life while being social. Although some may prefer being antisocial. It all varies from person to person.

I totally agree. You can play online poker and be very sociable in real life.
