In my opinion, poker is dangerous because it involves both luck and skill. A lot of people are confused by the skill part, and believe that if they read the best poker books and articles, study statistics, attend some poker "academy", analyze hands, and spend a lot of time and money playing cash games and tournaments, they are guaranteed to make a profit eventually. That is completely wrong. It is a known fact that in the stock market 80% of people are losing money, and out of the rest, the top 5% of the people make 80% of the profit. And that is the stock market, poker is way worse than that. So if you are interested in playing poker for entertainment, why spend money when there are very nice freerolls out there, cardschat freerolls and others, you can play for free and win real money, not much but you get to enjoy the game you like without putting your finances and loved ones at risk?

you can become an addiction but i think it would be the easiest to overcome .. there is a phrase that says that an addiction cures another addiction .. so, think that if you are looking for positive or less negative addictions they can help .. you could call it: include different habits in your day to day .. also try other games, such as shooter or fighting those to me helps me to forget a little the negative situations of my life and poker .. a good way to get out of the tilt can be 1 day or 2 playing a shooter game .. lol

I think poker/gambling in general can be and is very addictive to some people. If not controlled it can become the downfall of many who choose to take it up. Play smart and only with money you can afford to loose imo.

Yes it's addicting.

Here's a tough question for you!

We all love to play poker or we wouldn't be here. But do any of you think you take it too far? Do you think you might be addicted to online poker?

Read this article and let's discuss poker addiction:

Online Poker Addiction

I think that 7-8 years ago I was bordering on addiction - because I often put playing poker before spending time with my husband. After Black Friday we agreed that I would play primarily live poker so that when I play I can focus on it - and when I am home I can focus on work and family. It has worked out very well for me.

Now I only play CardsChat games from time to time.

Let us know about your experience with playing too much.

Yes it's addictive.
And it's easily addictive.

I haven't read the article yet,
but I will at least cruise through it if not read it all.

I've seen too many studies all ready that have proven it is addictive.
There have been some TV documentaries on PBS over the years about addictive behaviors, mind conditioning, and programming, and more often as not they reference gambling sooner or later in the programs covering their studies, tests, and experiments.
There are few real life movies about it. It's sad to see how it trashes a life.

OH YAH!..it's addicting. It changes the way the brain works.

The addicted poker player is often by several different names.
Fish...is a common one. You all know the rest.

Las Vegas warns you about it in their advertising on TV.
(they don't want to go the big tobacco route I think..)

poker stars knows it's addicting.
Americas Card Room knows it's addicting.
Las Vegas knows it's addicting.

If you have to crack your knuckles....you got a brain twitch.

Poker is the same thing.

((I did just go and pull up the link you posted))
(GREAT page, I had seen it already..I didn't know your link was to the CC page)

of course is addictive, I went addict game, but exceed! .. in my country are prohibited casinos, there are no casinos in my country ago 6 years what banned but when they worked I was playing a lot and lost a lot of money, only once win a lot of money with only $ 10 win over $ 8.000 in one night, but had lost $ 1.000 in in poker and I only had been $ 10 pocket and I went to the blackjack table and win $ 100 after I went to play slots and earn jackpot cumulative $ 8.000, but the game on line is addictive but not re as dangerous as being addicted to casino games live, the game online is addictive but is not dangerous because it has a limit, the game online is addicted but you can control, a board that gave me a friend is when you play online not put sound effects because that you stimulates make you more addict because when you're not playing and these doing other activities and you hear a sound like the sound effects of the game your involuntarily looking play immediately, sound effects you become more addicted to the game, watch it !!!

It can be... I dont think it has to do anything with poker it self but more with peorsonality of the "user". Some people have problem with substances but some dont. Having that dopamin releace can be quite addictive. On the other hand Addictions can be possitive. ... We all heard that "never give up" stuff.
But yes. you should be weary of what/when you do. The edge between intellectual development/fun and "lets sell grandmams jewls" is thinker than most people can think.

I play poker for many years. I think I had a time when I was addicted to it, but these were short periods, which was followed by longer omissions. Of course everybody is different, there is someone who can become addicted, but I think there are more dangerous games that cause serious addiction (roulette, Casino games).
Less complex gambling-based games are more damaging. Poker is not like that.

At the beginning when i started playing poker i was looking at it like a hobby. But after some time when i get to the business i needed to make a big decision. I've made poker my priority over the work. I was working on improving my skills on poker so i can leave my job and focus on earning from poker. After like 1year of learning poker i decided to leave my job and focus 100% on poker. I was playing 8hours per day poker and i was earning like 3times more than i was before. I've talked to everybody i personally know, and i only was looking from them to understand me, to understand what can i achieve and support me. For me poker is very addictive game and i can never quit it.
P.S. I was thinking what would happened if they block/remove worldwide the poker? Any thoughts from you guys?

Not for me. I find live Poker a lot more enjoyable. Online is just the option when I do not want to leave the house or no live games are going on.

I think poker can be addictive of course. Like everything in life can be addictive and overused. For some it is chocolate, for some it is alcohol, drugs or the use of internet at all. For some it is the sport in the gym. I don't want to say, that I am free of all of this.

In my opinion, it is good, if you recognize it, if you are overusing something and are able to stay away and live your normal life. Or at least you should be able to talk to someone and take help from someone, who is close to you, if you have a problem about something.

I recently read very interesting words in a book about buddhism. It was about like this:
We idealize the freedom, but we are like slaves to our habits.

Nice Article.

Gambling is addictive plain and simple but there are also many other things in life that are addictions. Many of which are accepted by society like fame.

We just need to control what we let it affect. Do not allow it to affect what is important to you in terms of time and money. Do not allow it take away time from your job, do not allow it to take time away from family and friends.

You also cannot plan on how much you can win over a certain period so should not have other things in your life dependent on your gambling winnings. Example do not take your next month's grocery funds and gamble away and hope you will win it back in time.

Most people deny they are addicted to anything makes them feel better about themselves perhaps, I guess anything can be addictive, we just dont always label it as such. If you can go without it for a time, it might not be addictive.

Online Poker itself is not addictive, addiction is a mental condition that affects a lot of people, something the player has or hasn't, the game itself can be addictive to some players that are susceptible to addiction.

Quite generic question to be honest.

It depends on each and specific individual. Online poker can be addictive, as addictive can be online backgammon, casino, LoL, DOTA, Hearthstone and any other online popular game. If someone is a weak personality and lacks the strength of character and mental toughness to put clear and specific limits to ourselves, then, yes, online poker can become a horrible, time-waisting, zero-return addiction.

In my opinion, a good way to tell if you are addictive to poker, is by setting specific daily stoploss limits for your sessions and see if you religiously adhere to these limits or not.

Nice article. Good read for sure!

Poker can definitely be very addictive, just like any other game or activity that can cause a rush of adrenaline.

For me personally it's a hobby that I enjoy. I like to play the occasional MTT, and stay away from cash games for the reason that I have an addictive personality.

I think I've been close to depending on poker for the first two years since I met him. When I met poker, I could play poker all day long and my main problem was sleep disturbances because the most interesting tournaments start in the evening and continue until the morning.Systematic lack of sleep made me irritable, but I got used to the new sleep schedule and began to rest more and everything became normal.

Absolutely! You must play with caution don't let winning go to your head I used to have a hard time stopping when I would get ahead. Numerous times I could turn a $40 deposit into few hundred dollars but instead of being responsible and exiting I'd stay and keep playing on pokerstars. Setting restrictions for yourself will help save you money and stress trust me .

In my case, i make healthy use without interfering with other activities. By the way, the card game is a good form of socialization and a great mental exercise, which strengthens the bond between people. How many times, when practicing a physical activity or performing a mental exercise, the act of listening to some music gives that decisive impulse for the activity to succeed?

Studies have proven that listening to certain types of music while performing some activity can help both your physical and mental performance, helping to release some of the chemical compounds in our brain that are responsible for adrenaline, focus and energy.

This subject is very important. I also made a similar publication here with the title "Have You Ever Met a Poker Addict?" a time ago.

Because I do not like poker as a hobby but I do not take it as a profession, I play 4 years and usually 8 hours a day and maybe one day I intend to live only on poker
