I don't leave a table based off of when I am ahead or behind. I leave when I don't feel like I have an edge or if I am not playing well. I think looking at whether you are up is just the same as chasing your losses. You shouldn't chase a loss and you shouldn't protect a lead.

Usually i don t quit from the table if im ahead....But if i have 4 or 5 times the buy in...i prefer to take a small break....I don t like to force the thinks....Patience is important.....In poker you can lose easy 100$ , but you cannot win so easy 100$....

This is one of those questions that's tough to answer. I mean of course you should quit when you're ahead, but when is the best time. My answer would be when you feel like it is or when you're no longer in the right state of mind. If you've played for a bit and have built up a decent stack then you should immediately get up and cash out.

There have been times when I say I'm going to play until my button and end up losing it all before the button gets to me. There have been times where I've built up a large stack only to get my AA's cracked and then go on tilt and dump off my entire stack and them some. I'd say that the best time to quit is when you're just not feeling it anymore or you feel that players are starting to target you more often than not because you have built a decent chip stack.

Playing at PokerStar noticed that when you replenish the balance, you first win. And as soon as you withdraw some money, you begin to lose even with incredible combinations.

Set a goal and leave when you get there. Everytime, it takes discipline.

Lots of good advice here with several mentioning personal rules they like to follow. I've found that the rules van very easily go out the window once you have won some big pots. That's when I recognize my god-like abilities to play poker and go on to make amazing plays that turn out to be, well, not so amazing. We talk about self discipline without talking about what we are really trying to control....our emotions. I've found that I successfully pulled out of a live game with my winnings that it was because I slowed down, calmed down, and then quit when I remembered why I was at the table in the first place. I was there to make money and I had done that. Of course there were a few times when Mr. Ego thought it was more important to prove my game was all about skill. I think these moments also helped though because memories of past stupid losses helped to get my rear out of the chair.

Getting out when you are ahead I think is one of the hardest things to do in the gambling world. When you are feeling great and hitting the cards you want to hit it is easy to forget that we all play poker to make money. Dont get me wrong I do play because I just simply enjoy the game but the end goal is to always profit. Controlling your emotions is the biggest rule to follow in poker

If I have more than doubled my original stack and some of the losers are getting mouthy, saying they will get it all back etc. I like to cut those dreams short and head over to the bar. One time I was by far the youngest guy at the table and had a degen calling me Harry Potter. Stacked him with QQ vs AQ played a few more orbits and cashed out. You should know when you've got the best of those guys

I don't play cash games very often but yesterday I played in a $1/2 cash game. I bought in for $100 and I very quickly won a couple hands bringing my chip count up to $187.

I was thinking that if maybe I fold a few more crappy hands I can leave the room with a profit for the first time ever.

But then I get dealt pocket aces and went all in after the flop. the villain shows a pair of jacks, and of course, catches a jack on the river. There was over $200 in the pot.

When do you think should be the right time to quit while you are still ahead in a cash game?

If you play poker for entertainment, sitting in for only 15-20 minutes will not satisfy your quest for fun. It was too soon to leave after winning early. You got dealt the best starting hand in poker...it lost this time, but it would win most of the time. It was unfortunate, but you were not ready to leave at that point.

Once I get up by that much it usually takes a couple of bad beats to get me away from the table.

OP, on subject of low NL ie sub 5/10 cash in brick style live games.

First, you reflect on yourself and define you comfy zone, if thats 30 mins 1 hour. So be it.

Often its multi part answer to the question, and different for everyone.
-Time
-Underdstand game selection, or your standing on table
>>image, edge, whale, VIP etc
-Time, redef your limits
>> risk?, tired?, tilt?

In order to gain xp, and feel more comfy in terrible spots you have enter areas your general dont want to,
>> example your are 1/2 with bankrool of 2k, and notice 2 losing players you normally see at 1/2 playing 2/5 short handed, that would a time to jump over and take a shot.

And I understand the OP post would 1 month ago, but can get a refresh on hand. Not just a AA vs JJ all in post flop, but details?
postion, imagine, your pov of villian, self define?

mild aged white dude, est income level sub 40k
Looks nervous, new uncomfy, stacks chips oddly, newbie
Raise size, standard and flipping his hand up,
Villan is only playing his own cards, do think he thinks about us?

Its very hard to make money in poker without cards, but you will make more money on them cards if understand people, postion, and image.

Study all you can, ratio 4 to 1 on time invested to study vs playing LIVE, save up some money to build a bankroll,

Imho, never more 10% of roll on table and remove emotion from the game. You that action, either self study or find a mentor at higher level of play.

Turn yourself into the shark that eats the fish due to study, practice, and need to eat.

Good luck at tables.

I usually set a time limit and stick to that, unless I see something fishy or get uncomfortable.

Baby, is the Kid poker? maybe the probability is still there if you doubled? I had to get out. I always set a goal for myself. ill. bank. enios, $ 100, $ 200, time to go. remember 2 aces. in 1 case out of 5, he loses. you shouldn't have gone all in.

Quit at 1.5-2

My general rule is to typically quit if I am at 1.5-2 times my buy in. This will build a bankroll and if you lose the exact buy in next time you play you are still at profit. Every time I go against this rule I end up losing a big chunk of my profit if not all due to experiencing the high of winning big hands. You will win hands and you will lose them as well no matter how good the cards may be pre flop.

If you notice the following actions:

Play more hands than usual.
You bluff more often for no good reason (both preflop and postflop).
Feel hopeless that you cannot win a single pot.
Make bad calls on the river knowing you need to fold.

I quit once I have, double with what I started with. I am that kinda of person. Don't need to win too much, double is nice. I find staying longer , you end up losing more. Like anything that's what I have learned to do and it works out well that way.

You never quit the game cause you're winning, you quit playing when you either get tired, start making bad decisions or the game dies. Don't quit cause you're winning, if that's the case that means you'll keep playing to chase your losses. Playing cards for profit is about volume, you need a large sample size, short term you can win or lose but the long term key to be profitable.

You should quit when you start to change the way you play your cards. As long as you can still play by your normal poker rules then keep playing. But, if you loosen up or tighten your game then you should call it quits for the day.
