I can only say this; I have moved up to higher MTT games, from 1.10 to around $5, as an example. My thinking was that I would see fewer luck boxes and lotto players than in freerolls or $1.10 games.

So far, this theory has fallen on it's ear. Just yesterday I tried a squeeze play from the BB; the cutoff was the original raiser and the SB flat called. Since I had AK, I thought this would work and shoved. Blinds at 100 and my stack at 2k, with my AK facing a 3x pre flop raise by a larger stack (original raiser) and an equal stack (SB).

Sure enough, the bigger stack (who I thought had a range of weaker aces and big connecting cards) folded. The SB, however, even in chips with mine, called off his entire stack with J-rag. And, of course, sucked out on the river.

I Do not think too many would flat call 3x from the SB with Jack-rag, much less call all in for their game life, yet here I was. in a $4.40 game.

Ugh.

Steps SNG's on FTP until you get a 26 or 75 ticket, and then switch to a matrix SNG to convert it to cash is a great way to build a bankroll with low risk

Sng is the easiest to build a bankroll.. At least it was for me. I started with normal speed then moved to turbos 45mans and 18mans. 18mans are the softest IMHO. If you're decent and not a spew monkey you can easily built a bankroll. Then you can play cash or MTT;s.

This is totally opposite of the truth.

Short term variance can kill you and you might not get any results but in long term, if you're a winning player, you will show results in MTT. You need big roll to play MTTs because of big variance. You need to make top 3 to get a big payout. At least a final table.

Cash, 9 man 18 man SNG are the best because of lower variance. Heads up gives the illusion of having a low variance because its just you and one opponent and whoever have the edge should win. In reality when you are playing like 80%+ of the hands, the variance is HUGE. I don't recommend heads up for building BR unless you are experienced at it or can bum hunt.

There is always fish in poker. Watching some videos of hand histories of winning players, there are still people like this at 3 figure buyins. Fish is attracted to the allure of a big score. Think of it as the bait when you go fishing. They're always gonna be there to pump in money for the winners.

I am surprised how many of you said SNGs and MTTs. I am not saying that is wrong, just surprising.

I have always been a cash player. I find it extremely boring to play SNGs and MTTs. You sit there for a long time, and there isn't really much reward for your time (just my opinion). People just play totally different cash vs. SNG. I just think I don't have the right playstyle/mindset for tournaments.

I prefer cash games because I can easily make 2 or 3 buy-ins in a short period of time if I play right, and get some cards.

All it takes is patience and control to play cash. It is easy.

I believe that SNGs and MTTs are much higher in variance, due to the escalating blinds (just my opinion on it). You have very little time. You end up getting forced into playing garbage hands, and luck is a large factor.

In cash, you can just sit back and wait for better cards, especially at micros - most players are sooooo bad they always get involved with total rags. It is like printing money sometimes.

Bottom line: It is just my preference to play cash. I profit in cash. I don't think I am even a winning player in tournaments, although I have not kept track.

In no way am I claiming that this post is anything else than my opinion (just in case someone wants to quote me, and punish me for being wrong).

That depends on your personal style. Try different games and see which is best for you.

Tournaments give the player with the most knowledge and experience a bigger edge over less experienced players, but I prefer ring games, because you can quit any time in case you go on tilt :)
