Hello, what are your opinions about poker books? are they effective? Cheers
Yes, and they're even more effective than you think. But poker books are needed more to form your global understanding of poker and the specifics of this simple and complex game at the same time. If you want to learn how to play poker, it's better to take online training, but if you want to learn how to play poker and its depth, read poker books. I advise you to read “Every Hand Revealed” by author Gus Hansen. This is the best poker book I've read. You'll be happy!

Yes books are useful, but videos and personal experiences are very important.

I don't think they can help. Still, it seems to me that only long practice games will hone your skills. At the same time, I agree that reading books is a useful activity.

Unfortunately the books are out of date. Need to play a lot of tournaments, work with a coach, watch a training video

Of course, it is advisable to read books written by professional players to improve your game.

Learning from books or any other content is always helpful. Some people will say books can be outdated or not so good but many books will bring a ton of value depending on the skill level you have at the time. Take Harrington on Holdem. Its a old and obsolete series but for a beginning player this book is really valuable.

There is a lot of information on the Internet today. You can also find plenty of learning opportunities here on Cardschat. In the past, books and poker magazines were the opportunity to learn, and I think it is worth reading books as a basis, both old and new ones.

Any training material created by a specialist will be useful. Including books. This doesn't just apply to poker.

I found reading books helped me to gain an understanding of poker theory. Training courses, webinars or videos may be more up to date and relevant but some topics never go out of date. For example, "The Mathematics of Poker" by Bill Chen will teach you how to calculate pot odds, your equity, how many poker outs you have and so on.

Yes, poker strategy books can be useful.

Personally I recommend devouring anything and everything you can access regarding poker strategy/tactics.

Use what works for you, don't bother with what doesn't.

There will be a lot of stuff that will be outdated now but it is still important foundations of knowledge and will help you identify opponents' levels of skill and understanding.

Also check out CardsChat's online tutorial course 'How to become a winning player in 30 days'... ;)

Hello, what are your opinions about poker books? are they effective? Cheers
they will give you the theory but the practice you will only need to get is playing against different poker players so it is 50% knowledge and 50% experience so the books will help you in any case

books will give you a very good foundation, especially with regard to mathematics and the theoretical part of the game. Read as many as you can, but know that the game is always evolving.

Books are useful only at the initial level of learning. Everything else is your practice.

well.. most of the books are outdated. Some things like potodds will never change, because math never changes but most of the strategies from books are just bad these days. Some stuff from them can be still good for microstakes because you can learn some foundation of poker, they give you whole look on some situations, but I believe they aren't as good resources as watching the videos for example and making notes from them. There are some good, newer books like Modern Poker Theory or Play Optimal Poker, but they are better for more advanced players I believe.

I think how you read the book makes a difference.
I am trying to beat 2NL online and have found a simple book on microstakes very helpful. However how you read a book has to be taken into account and how complex the material covered by the book. I have read my simple book at least three times, one of the times was to make a summary of the book. Now I pick a subject and read the relevant section.

Join Upswing poker and have look around there. The beginners stuff will give you a good grounding.
Most of the books don't reflect the modern game.

You can absolutely get better by reading poker books. You shouldn't, however, get too engrossed in theory and statistics. Do you desire victory over your friends? Playing online won't benefit you unless you're willing to treat it like a business, invest a lot of time and money, and treat it that way.
I would strongly advise against trying to play professionally because it is one of the most difficult paths to follow. Observation is essential if you wish to stop losing to your friends. You will ultimately figure out how to beat them if you keep an eye on what they do and how they play.
