Hi,

I am truly committed to getting better at poker and I find it frustrating when the chip leader in a tourney has shared a table with you from word go and you have watched him build his stack knocking out legit hand after legit hand with 3-4o or suited and 4-5o or suited???really??

NOT a huge stack bullying the table full of postnfolders and 3 players,,but right from the get go.. His ace-j always pulls a straight if there is a set of A's or K's?? its dumbfounding. 4 and 5 people in the pot doesnt matter.

Am I missing something???

did he read some book I dont know about?

Have you read and would recommend any poker books that you feel are must reads????

This is why poker is called gambling. If some player plays like a fool, he'll get his in the end. Count on it.

What books have you read already? You obviously know the lucky player is likely not playing well, just running well, so we can ignore that part.

If you want book recommendations, tell us what you have read and what games you are focusing on.

Sure it is. It is the very definition of running well. It is short term luck. These things happen to all players. Some days you will be the one with the lower set that rivers quads. Other days, your opponent gets to be that person.

Unless you can post some hand histories that shows he really played 54o well (which would be amazing in a tournament setting), it is just luck.

As for books, you want no limit hold'em tournament specific books?

In that case, I remain a huge fan of the Harrington on Hold'em series. It is hard to go wrong, if you really commit to learning those books. You might not be the best modern tournament player with the most up to date 20xbb shoving range perfectly analyzed, but you will be worlds ahead of most players.

what were you playing

What game were you playing this happens in the free rolls a lot and also in micro re buys In the free rolls they just don't care and once in a while they get lucky and if they stop once they get chips they sometimes do good but in the long term don't cash very often but it cost them nothing so they don't care . Then in the micro re buys they play a 10 cent or 25 cent buy in rebuy 10 or 20 times so are in for $2 or $5 they will usually eventually hit a few in a row and get a decent stack so they invest more to get an advantage but by doing this they have to get in top 5 or 10 just to break even so again is a losing strategy . rest assured they do not win often because they don't have the sense to stop playing reckless after they get ahead .

as for books I have not read any good online books am interested if someone has good suggestions for breaking into live play there are a few good ones depending on your level most that I have read are a little dated for today's game but the one that helped me the most in getting started will always help new players is "Caro's book of poker tells"

On it and stack it, the player opens a large range of cards with which he can open. And the mind must always be present...

Theory of Poker, by David Sklansky
This one I have and I like a lot
Know that even if you read several books, you will not escape the variance that poker often presents, so you will have to struggle and maybe even many have defeats to learn.
you try to perfect yourself in a game format, you will realize that you can win like everyone else does, good luck

As a general suggestion try breaking the game down into sections and working on each part, I.e. pre-flop, post-flop, shove/fold, defending blinds etc.

Excellent advice!!! Sections sounds like a great way to dissect where you need improvement. I think poker is similar to golf that way. One day my putting is on fire but my t-shot is not working??? Thanks!

Ya true, books are just theory and it often never plays out like it's written. Lots of hands , lots of hands! Even then the community cards always throws dif options on the table

Jonathan Little. Excelling at No-limit Hold'em. For me this book was a revelation. After reading it, I greatly improved my game.

Books I read and truly recommend:

Doyle Brunson/ Supersystem II
- covers different poker variants (sometimes a bit "dry"
Gus Hanson/ Every hand revealed
- very engaging, takes you through each hand of a MTT he won
Mike Matusow/ Check Raising the devil
- nice story
Dan Harrington on Holdem
- Basics & good strategy for Live Poker

Books I'm going to read:

Harrington on Modern Tournament Poker

Enjoy!

Poker books

I have read online that some people who read books on poker strategy have felt the advantage gained in there game.
Is there any books that anyone can recommend.
Thanks

Poker is changing fast, books are becoming obsolete. Watch a video about how good players play.
