When I am pissed, I honestly just stand up and walk away and deal with it. Letting it out on others is especially not the way to go! =) It's just poker!

Tough question. What i do is put on mozart or greatful dead while i play. this almost puts me to sleep because im so calm. Then i play at stakes where if I lost i wouldn't care. This is hard because you don't want to play at such low stakes that you find each hand to be a joke and you dont want to play at stakes that cause you to become violent.

No need to change anything as long as your not hurting anyone and you deal with your rage... maybe over time you'll overcome this

Nah, I think they're nailing it here. The outcome of any particular hand is irrelevant. So you got it all in with AA and some jackazz called you with 23s (hey! Sooted cunnectorz!) and you lost. So what. You're going to play that preflop AA thousands of times. On average, you'll make money on the hand.

You probably understand you shouldn't get angry, you just have to internalize it enough that you really don't get angry. There's no question some idiot is going to suck out on you, just when. Just let it flow on by, one hand amidst thousands, knowing you made the +EV play, and HOPE people keep putting themselves in positions where they have to suck out.

Stop getting angry about things that shouldn't anger you and your question takes care of itself.

RF

I agree with this ^^ 100%!! It's not about getting mad and getting over it quickly... it's about not becoming emotionally involved period.

LOL, so Grateful Dead = Mozart :D

The idea of inducing a "calm" state is a good one though.

OP, you said you keep cool when playing live, you need to put yourself into the same state when playing online. While playing a hand, you might try to recall similar hands that you've played live, and try to imagine that you're actually at a live table.

Or pretend while you're playing online, that you have a prospective employer / client sitting with you, or anyone else that you wouldn't want to display your temper in front of.

Google for self hypnosis or read PsychoCybernetics by Maxwell Maltz.

IveGot0uts's post about a classically conditioned response, is great. In simpler terms, you've developed a (bad) habit, that you need to replace with something else. Smiling / laughing would be the healthiest one

Other posts here about dis-regarding the results are great, and they hint at why any of us get upset.

For most of us, when an outcome doesn't match an expectation, the "automatic" result is usually a "negative" emotion. If we're aware of that we can work on creating a positive or neutral reaction.

A great series of books on emotions->results-expecations etc, is the "Inner Game" series by Tim Gallwey.

Btw, I wrote this post just after shoving with top two pair and getting sucked out on the river by a straight draw :D

Yikes. People are misunderstanding my thread. I pound my desk to get rid of tilt and move on. I know bad beats are part of the game. I play within my bankroll and I move on. I pound it when someone who played their hand VERY horribly got rewarded. Just for a second after bad beat is pulled, I pound my desk hard, and then relax and move on. I'm a veteran to bad beats and I do not let it get to me. My part that I need to fix is being able to relax and move on WITHOUT pounding. I can only relax and move on by pounding since it releases the anger.
Sorry I must disagree here, if you have it under control and don't let it get to you WHY do you pound the desk. It sounds like you almost have it under control, you just have to let it go it is pointless pounding the desk. One day you will cost yourself $$$$ by pounding, one day you will pound something accidentally and you will break it.

What I meant by not letting it get to me was I don't let a bad beat affect my future hands. Inexperienced players will be tilted and will play wrecklessly while I'll still play my game regardless of the bad beat I just took.

For everyone giving wonderful advices here, thank you very much. Many wonderful advices here, such as getting a punching bag near my computer while having a stress ball on my desk. Eating ice cream can be a good idea.

I bought a new desk for $110. It's very sturdy and it's invincible against my pounds. Bought a black sturdy desk from IKEA. Very good quality with metal legs.

Punching a stress ball would be more prefereable than pounding your "indestructible desk".

.. Unless you'd really prefer to develop a stress fracture / torn ligament ... other damage to your hand / arm  Is any amount of money lost worth that ?

You were better off with a desk that could break, now you'll be absorbing all the energy in your hand/arm.

Even better would be to develop the same cool / calm you exhibit at live games, as continual anger / stress is not "+ev" for longterm health.

Suffering a heart attack due to poker is not +ev either

Set getting your temper under control as a personal challenge, maybe every time you lose your temper you donate $XX to charity (or send it to me :D)

Think of pounding your desk as being as dumb as putting your hand through a glass window / putting it on a hot stove element ... etc.

Umm... why a 'homeless person'? I have alot of sympathy for homeless people and have met many along my path ( I once picked up a hitchiker 7hrs. from where I live, asked the guy where he was going and he replied, "I'm not sure...". Brought them to my home, gave him a room, food, got him hooked up with a job. Maybe I should've just given him a back-hander and turfed him out on the shoulder??)

OP.. I think alot of the posters were suggesting to look at a solution to not feeling the need to release any frustration and instead to dig deeper & eliminate the source of it.

Tips To Win At Poker Game

Hello,
Before starting to play the game, keep in mind these simple suggestions:
*Inspect the site. Make sure that it is authentic.
*Read the terms and conditions of the site. Check the maximum payouts and the minimum bets.
*Allocate a budget for the day. That budget will determine how much you are willing to lose or to win in the game. Stick to the limit.
*Do not gamble if you can not afford to lose.
*Try to find sites that offer No deposit poker bonus or offer free poker money

And I can recommend you a good Poker Site to help you recording Top Score.
Poker Rush, a player can elect to score each hand on the 1st, 2nd or 3rd draw. No discards are allowed after the 3rd draw. The game is played until 2 decks are over or until the allotted game time expires. Poker Rush differs from a well-known casino-style poker games. As opposed to casino-style Video Poker (which is played against the House), Poker Rush is a game of Skill, played against Other Real People competing for Top Score.
Thanks

well two things spring to mind.

1. You pound the desk after getting a bad beat and this releases stress and you immediately feel calm. Is it a problem that really needs fixing? Buying a stronger desk would seem the simplest solution.

2. You do not bang the table when playing live, why? What is so different? When you play live and do not bang the table, do you relax? If so its learned behaviour, you have started a habit of banging the table when playing online.. so stop it!!

If on the other hand you do not bang the table live but do not realx as well then tilt is something you need to learn more about. Clearly the act of banging something is a part of your anti-tilt mechanism and this needs to be addressed because it is something you cannot do live and therefore not being able to hit something is impacting on your live game.

So its one or the other, hitting something is a stress releaver to you, in which case you need to work on other means of reducing stress to fix your live game, or if you can relax playing live without hitting something then its purely learned behaviour and you could therefore learn not to do it.

Maybe instead of a swear jar you could have a thump jar, or every time you hit the desk transfer $1 to me.. you would soon lear not to do it if its simply learned behaviour.
