When I played it, I did great with play money. I hit every impossible hand and played for them. I don't know why I was selected to win. It seemed to me it was just encouragement to get into the real money games, where I was never the lucky one. Everybody plays bingo in the play money, I don't recommend it. It will only ruin your real game.

There is so big difference between real money and play money, it's not even good for training.

I agree with Anton. If you wanted to be an electrician and they told you that the school cost 1500.00 would that seem unreasonable? Would you be opposed to paying money to learn a skill you will always have? Just like any other skill, it takes time and money to learn to play poker, don't fool yourself, nothing is free. .01/.02 and free rolls are the training grounds. If you can't make a profit there, you are not ready for more, keep spending time studying rather than wasting it with play money.

play money your taking the emotional variance out of poker nothing to really lose so when you play for year you will have a bigger chance of finding self in situations where you seriously tilt. That would be my biggest concern. I would not use it often. The more you put yourself out there the bigger risk reward you could have.

I really myself see no reason to do play money now if you're american and cant find home games etc.. and want to desperately play on stars in hopes of a future where you can play again maybe is ideal but people have no risk in that scenario no one is playing for real. I really question the point.

If you have just started learning to play poker then it is best to remember poker hands and superficial study of the game of poker. As a tutorial for learning the game of poker for money is not good. I played the first 2 years of the regional tournaments with buy-in chips. It was interesting.

The best way to learn anything is to do it. Compare playing a saxophone to playing poker. Play money is practising in your room. Real money is being with good musicians on stage. ...

Beautiful wording and probably nails the essence of it.

First experience might go more to the side of school band / garage band, so maybe they are not ‘that’ good =)

play money and real money

The truth that I see in the whole situation is that poker is a fun game either way u look at it for play or real as they say. poker is poker and u got to love the game to reach your goal. u all started playing play money as I see it. early on when u didn't even know the game. To make it real is to love the game. just for the game. Just saying.

When you play for real money a lot more work nerves and emotions so that there is a difference in one and in the second game

Play money solely for entertainment, the only thing that can be gleaned is the study of combinations.

How about the 1 million chips tournaments? Are these tournaments with play chips more serious than lower stakes free chips tournaments?

I would be really surprised if that would not be the case. Big money play money cash tables are said to be close of cash games too, what level I don't remember (probably micros though). If you work hundreds of hours to build your play money stack, you surely start to appreciate them.

This is interesting from Barry Greenstein http://www.pokerlistings.com/barry-greenstein-from-robin-hood-of-poker-to-play-money-kingpin-39918

It's completely different things, to play for real money and games, the best training is books and video, and not a game for free chips. Although there was such a good player who won 150 million free chips and sold them, eventually became a millionaire in a few years for real money, if I'm not mistaken about Williams

I've been playing for a very long time and when I switched to real money I realized that it was another poker and I spent some time before that ....: (Money play is not a joke for me

I used to play conditional chips, now I do not play, for beginners I think it will be normal to learn, and even better in freerolls.

For me, "play money" serves as a training platform.

I have a couple friends, who wanted to play with me. We jumped on pokerstars and hit the P500 PLO play money tables. These friends don't have real money online. The play money games can't be considered a teaching tool, unless it is one about how to beat extremely weak games. Actually, I don't think the weakest live game I've ever played in was that loose and crazy. Maybe if everyone at the table was drunk, very very drunk. There was one table with someone playing 98%/86%/84% (VP$IP / PFR / 3Bet). It was madness.

What also shocked me was the rake! When did Pokerstars start raking these games at 4.5% uncapped?!?! I mean, there was a 2,600xbb pot which was raked 117xbb! The rake was more than anyone could rebuy to. I was running PT4 while playing (which is going to make a mess of my database*, but whatever), and the average rake was more than 70xbb per 100 hands. I thought the rake at the micros was bad, but it's paltry compared to the play money games. Probably because the pots are a lot smaller.

The play money games are insanely beatable. Even with the horrible uncapped rake. I am up over 25 buy-ins in a little less than 1200 hands. I probably could have done better if I had been running well.

* Fortunately, I can't play real money on Stars, so I can filter the play money games out easily enough.
