How much money did you lose, if any, until you became a winning player?

Well...i am down somewhere between $450 & $500...

I did all the incorrect things..

Played trash hands...tilted hardcore...chased losses..EGO...jumped stakes...did not use tracking software to assist with decisions...very VERY poor BRM...

It put me in a really bad spot as far as finacial.stability because i should have never.been playing with money i couldnt afford to lose...plus i was honestly not as good as i thought i was...so i dedicated a break period...where i could learn more about the game before i step back in... it was a few months ago i lost the money...not sure if comfortable yet getting back in...trying to maximize knowledge level first and figure out which.games fit me best...

I can honestly say that I have won more from poker than I have lost however I now know I will never be good enough to make a living from it and a large part of the reason is that whilst learning I had so much fun but now too much knowledge means I take things too seriously.

I now intend to put the fun back into playing which is one of the reasons I have decided to join this forum.

I started to play poker for fun 2 months ago. I've had some cool donk rolls and finished 12th on some 1st deposit freeroll winning 35$. I was complete newb, I only knew the rules of the game and the hands! Then I've started to read, watch and practice.. I've invested some more money, lost some and after a while, when I was on 0 win/loss I cashed out and decided to play to learn and have fun. So I guess I'm right in the middle, playing freerolls atm and some SnGs from the freerolls winnings :D
I have great fun and I don't need to worry about losing money. Maybe some day when I grow up as a player I'll become a winning player (crosses fingers)!

My previous post stated a loss of ~$500...although technically that would mean i was a losing player...i am pretty confident i lost my bankroll because of issues mentioned in previous post, not because i cant play...I understand that some people have never lost a whole bankroll and some people have started from scratch...i give props to those players and wish them nothing but good luck in the long run...

In my case...i felt horrible when i lost that money, but when i face reality i just look at it as a small price to pay....with all the information and resources on the internet...when i finally do step back into the game with a serious mindset and attitude there is no doubt in my mind i can crush games given i follow strict bankroll management...

So far the one thing that has improved my knowledge of the game, without a doubt, is these forums...

Also...Reading poker books...watching youtube videos..reading strategy articles...

So the message behind this post is even if you lose your whole bankroll. Take a break
and study more. Try to figure out what you were doing wrong...and when you feel your honestly ready to bring your A-game...

If you've lost money overall since you started playing poker, you're a losing player. Period. It doesn't matter how or why. Losses that occurred when / because you were having issues don't magically not count so you can tell yourself you're not really a losing player.

Simple question. Just wondering how much money some of you invested into your "learning period."

At what point did you go from losing to winning mostly?
The very first game I ever played online was Fulltilt's 'The Ferguson' ($1 buyin ~1,000 entrants). I placed 2nd for $114.00 (not bad for a $1 investment & had never played online before ever).
After that I was a marginally losing player for awhile playing SNG's (~ roi-10%) but it motivated me to study more & I became a sponge (read lots of books, articles, strategy guides, etc. etc.). I also supplemented my bankrolls with priv. freerolls, depositor freerolls, etc.
It was about 3mos. until I was consistently winning player but I never lost anything or went below my initial deposit (I was also a HUGE Bankroll nit)

Good question .. and specification perfectly ( "learning period " ) . Personally , i've got invested < 150 $ and i still learning . The best win was 40 $ 12 / 6580 on party poker was a 5000 $ Guarantee Freeroll . On PS the best placed was on 1,35 with K.O. 9 / 8000 > and i ve got some 20 $ ... So , i am down with a little < 150 $ but still learning ... It's hard but if you love poker , you invest and want to teach more and more to be a great player . In my case , i am a pretty bad player :d Need to learn more ...

I invested no money in poker yet...I just wanted to see if you can make money from $0 , only with freerolls. It's true that I've won some money , but not much so , I lost them pretty quick. I guess this is just not the right strategy. Maybe , if I'll deposit some I'll win a lot of money...Until I do , I'll still try to fulfill my dream : to make a lot of money starting from $0.

You said you're "technically" a losing player. This seems to suggest that non-technically, you're not a losing player.

I deposited about 30 bucks to Everest at the beginning, but I withdrew it after 2 months. So I didnt lose a penny of my money. Later I built my bankroll from frees. It's better playing with other's money.

500$ total per 5deposits. Started a year ago and was losing player half a year , then half a year breakeven and 1 month ago after fixing some monster leaks finally started winning.

Ilost over 10k between 2005 and 2010 cause I thought its not nessessary to learn the game. I was a real fish. Then I read some books , viewed videos and analiezed my hands. Since than I m a break even player. I still deposit from time to time , but mostly after a bigger withdrawl to start with new bankroll.

I played my first game of holdem in live tourney. I only played because i couldn't get them to play 8ball vs me for money.
When i sat for my first hand i didn't even know what the second best hand was. I knew there was a hand called royal flush but that was about all i knew.

For three weeks i played a couple of hands before getting knocked out, i stayed and watched the good and bad players do their stuff with various holdings.
Then i bought a pocket version of poker for dummies, lol and my whole world changed.
I FT cashed the next tourney and shipped the one after that..This will sound like bs (i understand that) but it's true and i can prove it, I final tabled 7 from 11 live after that.

I put $20 on FTP after my 2nd cash, the 1st place one, signed into my first sng and the rest is history.

I can't explain it as i am a well known slow learner, any ideas how a dummy can do that? i don't. have a clue.

Howard then taught me how to not lose my roll, the preek kept it for over a year, cheers Howy. Grrrrrrr.

I've deposited nothing since starting several months ago and have about $22 or so, but I wouldn't call myself a winning player yet. In spite of playing poker I'm very conservative with money; I thought it would be better to build a roll from nothing while I'm learning so I wouldn't be afraid of every little downswing, since I'm playing with other people's money.

Just start out real slow. ie. if you decide to try cashgame, start out at 2nl. If it's SNG's, play $1 buyins. Don't focus on the money/bankroll, just consider an investment into a poker education.

Read poker for dummies, i promise you it will pay for itself.

It can't show you how to dominate but it sure can show you what solid abc winning poker looks like at micro stakes.
