When downswinging, I go down the limit to reduce the effect of variance. After overcoming the decline in the bankroll and its subsequent growth, I do not rise to a higher limit for at least a month.

hello everyone! I continue to play without paying attention to the meanness of downswing, but who introduced it to the path?

wtf is a downswing?

I think, its supposed to mean a period, where we run significantly below our long term results due to bad luck AKA variance. What "significantly" means, is open for interpretation, but maybe its something like 50-100BIs for tournaments or 15-30 BIs for cash games. More than losing just a few sessions for sure. However truth be told a lot of players say, they are in a downswing, while in fact they are just losing. Poker is a zero sum game, so the majority lose in the long run, and its not always due to bad luck or "downswings" ;)

Losing bad

Hi I played a freeroll on 888 many infact ,players go allin in with any 2 why? UTG went Allin 6000 chips folded to me SB 2500 chips so I call he had 34s I had AKo he wins it seems to me that the generator favours the chip leader not to say that I haven't been in that position so losing online to me isn't playing to a strategy its a free for all luckiest wins this needs sorting out

That is not easy to deal with! Most of all because emotions get in the way.
My best solution is to just stop playing for a while or just to "call it a day" and cut my losses.

I used to handle it poorly and also would allow my br to take the beating. Once I notice a bad downswing I cut my BR allowance in half.

I go on a downswing for sometime and it just kills my bankroll everytime. How do you guys handle your downswings? This is One of my biggest problems in poker and would like to get better at handling this problem. Thank You

.:confused::confused:

I have a Secret? Although it is everywhere on the internet and in poker books when you read them and it is called Bankroll Management!
Playing beyond your Bankroll limits is a sure way to lose money you have deposited on-line, and even when it comes to playing live in a Casino. Never buy-in for more than 1% of your total Bankroll, so if you deposit $100 Dollars you limit your buy-in to $1 Dollar games, Deposit $1,000 Dollars and your limit is $10 Dollars, it is that simple.
I have had days where I lose every game I register for, but that is all part of the game, which can be very cruel at time's, other days I can win more than I lose, so I can and do suffer from downswings (Variance) but I can suffer a few bad beats and still come back the next day playing again, without it killing my Bankroll.
On-line I have over $600 Dollars with pokerstars, so can, if I wanted, buy-in for $6 Dollar games, I rarely do because I am not that motivated in making money playing Poker, for me On-line Poker is just a bit of fun and I enjoy playing.
Someone said playing for fun, is playing Ignorant, I say losing your Bankroll, is just plain stupidity, it takes a lot of hard work to become a good Poker player, and a hell of a lot more hard work to call yourself a Professional, I do not claim to be either, but I am sensible when it comes to losing my Bankroll, which I have never done.
Bankroll Management is just part of the hard work you have to study, and be good at, to make sure you never go broke, and I am sure there are many players who feel the same way.

When the fun Stops, STOP!

With the downswings the worst part is the first 10 to 30 minutes for me.That time is very crucial, because i can buy in and lose much more.I just tell myself its just a bump in the road, and i just move on.

Handling Downswings - my strategy.

I look at my play, number of pots i am playing, starting hands i am using, bet sizing, the opponents stats, the situation itself - for example stage of tourney, pot odds and equity.
I equally look at the value of tourney i am playing and the type of tourney - am i better suited to the long grind like an MTT or does a turbo sit and go/knockout suit me better, i know of several friends who never touch an MTT and make a decent living off grinding micro limit sit and gos.
I take regular breaks away from poker and devote energies into other things, i often find this has a positive effect on my play when i return.
I accept there are weak players in this game alongside variance, i have encountered several this week who play very marginal hands and will play any piece of a pot to the river and probability states those players will get lucky at times and as frustrating as it is - if my play is correct and my bet sizing is right - you cannot do nothing about an all in donkey or a player who fishes - its their game and their right to play their hand they want to- regardless of what we think!
I share hands with friends and check out optimal plays and use various poker tools to iron out any areas of weakness in my game and lets face it - if we were all as good as the length of time we play poker - we would all be amazing (if you have played a long time).

In my experience, the ONLY way to handle a downswing is to "cut it off", that is, to just stop playing and come back to play another day when you are feeling refreshed.

I don't take it very seriously. I think this is quite a normal situation, which is not worth worrying about. We need to move on. Unlucky now, so lucky next time.:)

I review my lasts games in order to identify how many times I played under tilt, sometimes we play tilted and not even notice, if I´m taking the right decisions, I still taking the right decisions, however in lower limits, lower fields and even freerolls.

I think absolutely any hand can be a winner. A lot depends on the player and the moment. But there is one thing in poker when absolutely nothing comes in! Then a bluff can try to pull out this game.

f you play online you get the impression that only there are periods of doawnsing, but I felt on my own playing live at the casino, for example I had two aces and I was defeated by 2 3 and I was at the final table at a live tournament. .... At that time, wherever I played live or online, I was unlucky, s

Very good question, I try not to lose my mind, even if it costs a lot, that drags more casualties and the idea is to be calm and serene to recover.

agreed. And they believe their 'norm' was actually an upswing
I have had a 30 buyin downswing in cashgame before though :( And I know some decent MTT regs. who had gone on a couple hundred buyin downswing... one in particular back on FTP. It was brutal.

I break the bankroll and it solves the problem.) I don't play cash games only freerolls and some micros usually. When I get the minimum withdrawal amount, I took money out of it. So in overall, I can say I'm a winning player. (Or do I? Depends on the fact that the money I earned had cost me much more time and effort, so not sure if it worth. But I enjoy it anyway)

For most people, the most challenging component of the game of poker is dealing with downswings and tilt. It may happen to anyone and can lead to tilt, which can have disastrous consequences at the poker tables.
We all want to win at poker, thus it's a very emotional game. Reminding myself that this is a long-term game and that no matter how difficult this day, week, or month has been, all of my opponents will ultimately have to go through the same thing is one method to deal with downswing.

How to handle any downswing....

Play golf and get really mad (or madder...).

Golf the impossible game. Poker is right up there with it.

Thanks for listening!

..Bluff..

breaking the bank happens in the process of learning and evolving poker, I already broke I got up I broke I got up again and today thanks to my studies I have absolute control of my bankroll.

When i meet downswings, i leave table.

Not necessary to wait until break the bankroll, it can't prove anythings.
