Honeymoon or Bust! Follow, learn, and laugh...

So I'm getting married in June, and I decided to join a new site and build a roll on there in order to pay for our honeymoon. Thought it would be fun for several reasons, but most of all I can play smaller stakes than I normally would and make content for it as I crush the games. lol Not sure if this is the best place to post it, but I thought it might be fun if some of you on CC want to follow along and watch the progress. I'll post some hands, videos, thoughts and graphs, etc..

So far I'm up $5524. I have a goal of 8k, so just about there. I wasn't downloading and tracking hands at first because wasn't really thinking about doing this. But since I started this is what I have:

Most of it has been 50-100NL w/ a little 200NL. I'm hesitant about keeping too much online at US sites, so I've been pulling some money as I go (I had over 24k on absolute when it went down). Plus it just takes forever to get money. So it's a minus in that I can't play higher stakes, but a plus that I can share some of my hands and be up on the current small stakes games.

I'll post some hands and thoughts tomorrow as well. My goal is to make this thread as helpful as possible to cash game players. Hopefully we'll all learn something, including me.

really cool that your starting a thread here

do you mind sharing which US site(s) its on? i personally play on lock and if you do i'd like to hear your take on the games and what times you specifically like to play or think its the highest +ev

also it looks like your calling 3bets pretty wide so i would loveee to see some 3bet pot hands? maybe if you find a spot like that in a session and could mark it to post and talk about your thought process :)

thanks!

Dude, John! Great to see you here at CC. For those that haven't checked it out, I can tell ya that Poker Zion is legit. Definitely worth checking out.

First - please *do not* post what site this is on. If people really want to know you should just PM, that seems the +EV play IMO.

Second - Please don't make me live in a world where top level pros squat at 100nl/200nl. That's soul crushing. Pay for your honeymoon and move on lol ;)

Third - We'd love to hear what you think of the state of 6m games at the levels your playing and some decent tips for people diving into these games and what to watch for.

Good luck John, I was going to use a portion of my winnings for my honeymoon back in May 2011, but it never came(can you guess why?). I fully agree with you taking some off little by little.

Congrats and great work so far.

It feels great when you can withdraw money from poker and buy stuff in the knowledge that other people have basically paid for it.

Thanks everyone for the congrats,I appreciate it. It's super cliche and cheesy, but I'm actually a very lucky man. Somehow I convinced a beautiful, smart, sweet, sexy, loving woman to marry me. Bad read on her part I think. lol

Back to poker. Just got done coaching a couple of students back to back. I don't do much coaching anymore (just don't have time so I don't take on many students), so when I have two in a day it zaps a lot out of me. Guess I'm getting older. But I do like the ah-ha moment for students when something big clicks for them. Had that in both sessions and it's always fun to see.

Couple of semi-interesting hands:

thanks!

juicy stakes and some Bovada. One site I had a small roll from affiliate deposits, and bovada I just deposited on.

Yeah, 3-bet pots I guess mostly because I've played much higher stakes that I feel comfortable with my reads, and I'm usually only calling in position. Maybe I'm doing it too much, but I think I'm making good decisions mostly. I have spewed at least once though. lol

Example of spew:
poker stars, $0.25/$0.50 No Limit Hold'em Cash, 6 Players

SB: $63.82 (127.6 bb)
BB: $50 (100 bb)
UTG: $50 (100 bb)
MP: $20.38 (40.8 bb)
CO: $26.50 (53 bb)
Hero (BTN): $53.10 (106.2 bb)

Preflop: Hero is BTN with J
club4.gif
A
diamond4.gif

UTG calls $0.50, MP calls $0.50, CO calls $0.50, Hero raises to $3.75, SB folds, BB raises to $11, 3 folds, Hero calls $7.25

Flop: ($23.75) 6
heart4.gif
4
spade4.gif
9
spade4.gif
(2 players)
BB bets $13, Hero raises to $42.10 and is all-in, BB calls $26 and is all-in

Turn: ($101.75) K
club4.gif
(2 players, 2 are all-in)
River: ($101.75) J
heart4.gif
(2 players, 2 are all-in)

Results: $101.75 pot ($3.00 rake)
Final Board: 6
heart4.gif
4
spade4.gif
9
spade4.gif
K
club4.gif
J
heart4.gif

BB showed Q
heart4.gif
Q
spade4.gif
and won $98.75 ($48.75 net)
Hero showed J
club4.gif
A
diamond4.gif
and lost (-$50 net)

Overall, and I just peeked at the stats, I'm profitable when calling with sub-prime hands. So having a slight loss here would even be ok, being in + (small sample) = berry good (and I'm a luck box so that helps).

Per Request.. I'll pull out some 3-bet defends.

Hand Converted by Ace Poker Drills Poker Training Software

NL Holdem $0.5(BB)
SB ($23.4)
BB ($77.7)
HJ ($50)
CO ($59.58)
HERO ($55.45)

Dealt to Hero A
spade.gif
Q
spade.gif

HJ Folds , CO Folds , HERO Raises To $1.75 , SB Calls $1.5 , BB Raises To $6.5 , HERO Calls $4.75 , SB Folds

Standard call, want him to bluff his secondary weak range.

Flop ($14.5) 3
diamond.gif
9
spade.gif
J
club.gif

BB Bets $10.87 , HERO Raises To $23.24 , BB Folds

Obviously I think I can fold out AK/AQ, and probably TT and small pairs. Small percentage of time a J likely also. Sometimes wouldn't mind a call/float here since I have some nice backdoor outs. If I'm shoved on I don't think I have more than 15-18% equity, so an easy fold.

HERO wins $34.69

This one is kind of read dependent. Opponent wasn't a good reg, and had seen him make some bad bluffs.

$0.50/$1 No Limit Hold'em Cash, 6 Players
Hero (CO): $97 (97 bb)
BTN: $116.10 (116.1 bb)
SB: $143.23 (143.2 bb)
BB: $61.05 (61.1 bb)
UTG: $192.75 (192.8 bb)
MP: $344.81 (344.8 bb)

Preflop: Hero is CO with Q
heart4.gif
J
spade4.gif

2 folds, Hero raises to $3, BTN folds, SB raises to $11, BB folds, Hero calls $8

Re-defending my open. Especially against regs I want them to know they aren't blowing me off my open buttons very easy. It becomes more meta games, and I start getting a lot more folds from a lot of regs.

Flop: ($23) Q
club4.gif
T
club4.gif
6
club4.gif
(2 players)
SB bets $12, Hero calls $12

Cool, I flop top pair. Call.

Turn: ($47) 3
heart4.gif
(2 players)
SB bets $25, Hero calls $25

Now clearly there's going to be a lot of rivers I'm not going to be thrilled about. I was reading it as a AJ with a club type hand. Not something I can get him to commit if I shove (almost it's close), but I can possibly snap off some river bluffs. Calling here is heavily read dependent because you're obviously committing yourself on a somewhat scary board with some bad rivers ahead.

River: ($97) Q
diamond4.gif
(2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $49 and is all-in, SB calls $49

Nice river. Hope he has something to call with now.

Results: $195 pot ($3 rake)
Final Board: Q
club4.gif
T
club4.gif
6
club4.gif
3
heart4.gif
Q
diamond4.gif

Hero showed Q
heart4.gif
J
spade4.gif
and won $192 ($95 net)
SB mucked K
spade4.gif
T
diamond4.gif
and lost (-$97 net)

Good read by me (pats back).

This one the guy was a spaz, so my 3-bet defend range would have been just about any hand I opened really. Just so happened I had a pretty strong hand this time. In spots like this against bad players that are just spazzing out, you are going with any pair or big draw you hit on the flop. So I think I can stack him if I hit anything = easy call.

$0.25/$0.50 No Limit Hold'em Cash, 6 Players

CO: $24.85 (49.7 bb)
Hero (BTN): $53.34 (106.7 bb)
SB: $14.59 (29.2 bb)
BB: $56.06 (112.1 bb)
UTG: $19.38 (38.8 bb)
MP: $98.74 (197.5 bb)

Preflop: Hero is BTN with K
club4.gif
Q
diamond4.gif

3 folds, Hero raises to $1.75, SB calls $1.50, BB raises to $7.82, Hero calls $6.07, SB folds

Flop: ($17.39) K
heart4.gif
2
heart4.gif
4
spade4.gif
(2 players)
BB bets $17.39, Hero calls $17.39

Nice, please keep betting.

Turn: ($52.17) 3
spade4.gif
(2 players)
BB bets $30.85 and is all-in, Hero calls $28.13 and is all-in

And thank you.

River: ($108.43) 7
