Do you believe someone can practice with play money?

Hello!

I started playing poker a few months ago and the last two weeks I've been watching videos and reading articles here and there, trying to understand this complex game. I decided to add 10 dollars to my Pokerstars account a few days ago, but I play horrible (for obvious reasons) and I lost everything in three days, playing cash games (micro limits). Right now I think it would be a good idea to try to reach an "x" amount of fictional chips, before re-depositing. What do you think? What experience do you have on the subject? Is it a good idea to practice with fictitious money and then go to micro limits, or it is a differente game, since there is no real fear of losing money with fictional chips?

Also, these last days I have played Sit n 'go tournaments of 9 players (fictional chips), and I am always among the first 3 places (which receive a prize). Maybe I should have invested my money there and not in cash games! lol. What do you think about this?

Thanks in advance and sorry for my bad english.

Play Money is a complete waste of time!!! (you are correct in thinking it is a different game)

Yes, Sit'nGoes might be a good idea. I'd suggest starting on 9player tables & playing regular speed blinds.

Also, I'd consider reading a couple of poker books to get a decent foundation to work from.

Lastly, you'd be wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better off trying to get into some freeroll tournaments instead of wasting your time in playchip games. If someone is suggesting that playchip games are good for gaining knowledge on how to play the game... so that you can take it to the 'real' money games, they don't have a clue what they're talking about. (ask them how well they can play 100bb deep cashgame poker. I'm sure the answer will be- "they suck")

Thanks guys for your inputs.
What good book do you recommend?

Greetings

If you're new?

Phil Gordon's 'Little Green Book'

Harrington On Holdem - Tournament play - Vol.1 & vol.2

these are a bit outdated but well worth reading if newer to the game as they'll give you a decent foundation to work from.

If you choose to follow a path playing SNG's, try out Collin Moshmann's SNG Strategy book or "Secrets of Sit n' gos" by Phil Shaw.

many lose a little money, they begin to understand that poker is a complicated game, your hobby does not have such a great value if you are not interested in improving skills

It is a not good idea. Better you will playing freerolls and likely, if you will be patient, you will win some money.

Thank you guys for ur advices! I'm looking for freeroll tourneys everyday but there is just a few and there are a lot of players. When I play freerolls I feel like I'm playing a lottery sometimes, especially in those that have re-buy. I feel that if you do not have luck in the first hands, then the blinds kill you (I only found turbo or hiper tourneys with small stack). How can I overcome this?
And there are very few freeroll tournaments :( I hope to get the necessary messages soon so I can join the freeroll on this page.

I think play money is a waste of time, with all the available freerolls why not practice and grow your bankroll. Another option is training sites like advanced poker training that offer simulated play training.

Just as in real money games the quality of poker rises as the buy-in increases. I believe one can work on there skills playing in play money games.

"Greenstein said that his view of play money poker isn’t really any different than it was before he gave it a shot, but he added that there are plenty of play money players who are quite good, especially as the stakes get higher. “….it keeps my game fresh,” he said." https://www.pokernewsdaily.com/barry-greenstein-is-a-play-money-champ-28001/

Here are a couple more links if you want to know more about Greenstein.

I start at least 4 freerolls at the same time 3 times a day, and every hour at least one.
In general around 30 freerolls in 12 hours, and it could be even more, but I don't play the ACR on demand, 4 hrs playing and only 10 places paid is beaten by most other pokerrooms. And though it's overflooded with pokerclowns, presidents, pokerkings, The_BEST's and tons of donks, it is still better than playmoney. Just find out who is who and sooner or later you will win some if you take poker serious, and with the won money you can mess with the bad boys step by step in paid tournaments.

I think that you waste time playing for virtual money, simply peoples pay there with all kinds of cards ... My advice is to deposit again, but try to play some sit and go tournaments better than playing cash micro... ;)

Cool. I think you'll like it. It's a good read... well-written & easy to understand some of the basic concepts he's putting across to us.

I'll still be here once you reach 15posts.... if you need any help with anything let me know.

Final recommendation - - check out some of the strategy articles here on Cardschat & browse the tournament strategy forum (it's mostly geared towards newer players as there are many here on CC). "learning poker" section in forum will be good too.
Ask away with questions in there. gl

you can practice to learn rules and start playing, but with someone wanna really learn, I thing freerolls may be a better option.
