As an ameteur player whom has taken a break from poker for the last 3 years, who went broke....lol. I want to know how people feel about using mathematical probabilities versus chip bullies. As for me, I love players who are chip bullies that think they can boss you around when Im sitting pretty from a probabilty standpoint, I've cashed in big numerous times building my poker addiction. However, I been crushed by those 1outers that have just crimpled my bankroll on bad beats. Love the game but just when you think you are on top of the game, you get kicked in the nuts.

I suppose if you're good enough to be consistently calculating the odds, you'll find you're on the right side of the win-lose coin more often than not for your good hands. I'm personally somewhere in the middle, playing a bit of the odds but also taking risks pre and post flop. It works for me, so I stick with it (for now).

You went into a tangent and talk about multiple subjects. All good subjects nonetheless. I know a few poker bro who considered themselves short stack specialists. At first I disagree with that logic, because if you're good then you want to buy in deeper vs weaker opponents, but the more i play live poker, i found out that this strategy is not bad at all.

A short stack specialist is meant vs chip stack bullies, because when he is in a hand, he is setting himself up for an ALL IN to double up his stack. Being short stack, his edge is that alot of decisions that would have been difficult now is simple, and he is impossible to be bluffed off a hand, whether if he is was deep, he might have folded a winner to a good double or triple barrel bluff.

Another edge for a short stack specialist is that, on the opposite end, when he is all in, a weaker player might be committed to call anyways because the pot is too good, whether it should have been a clear fold, now he forces the weak player to call off the remainder of the bet because its not much more to go.

So a short stack specialist take care of these two problems, a chip bully who can't use his chip to bluff him off the hand, and a weaker player to call all his chips because the pot is not much more for him to call. Now you see why a short stack specialist is a powerful weapon.

Your second point is correct, the poker gods will bring humble you and bring u back down to earth with those two outers and one outers when you think you got it all figured out. Thats why its EXTREMLY CRUCIAL to have a cushy bankroll and also a mind strong enough not to fall to tilt.

GOOD LUCK!

I think you need to do both; play the probabilities but also play the players. If you make someone fold they cannot beat you regardless of the probabilities. So play the probabilities but be alert for situations when you know you can make someone fold. Whether you have a big stack or not.

It sounds like playing short stack doesn't give you the room to make errors, like how humans think when we're have an abundance of resources (earth). I have never looked at it like this but it is funny how your able to retain 8-14BB but when you have 50-60 you sort of turn the dripping tap to a steady flow. I'm just out of the habit of having a big stack and pissing it away.

I play with my gut. I try and use all the tools at my disposal but nothing compares to what your gut tells you.

odds are great but dont forget to play the player!

also, deeper stack you can get out of the way of the 1 outers by using your chip advantage...

Sheriff the to table

If you have a chip stack that is valued at more than half of the value of the table you should lean into the table with your chip stack make them pay for their draws. short stacks all they got to do is double up six times and you can be the chip leader

I agree with you, players like this are the best. The key is to have enough money behind to stay in the game.

I used to play in a private game with an incredible whale who would get it in with all kinds of junk. The problem was he would always buy in to cover the table and what started out as a $5/10 game would end up playing like a $25/50 and sometimes $50/100 game.

Realizing that I didn't have the bankroll to withstand those kinds of swings I chose to no loner play in the game (even though it had some really big cannons). If you don't have the money to be able to withstand the game the size of the edge you need to play in it is usually more than you will have.

It takes humility and an ego check, but it keeps the addiction at bay and helps you stay in the game for the long run (which is what we all want in the long run anyway right?)
