I want to focus on tournament poker strategy, but right now most of the games available to me are live low-stakes NL cash games. My concern is that I'd be studying for a format I have no real application for while potentially losing out on playing a poker format I can study and play in. I prefer playing tournaments over cash games because I like dealing with multiple stack sizes and potentially hitting a massive prize. I also like understanding how to beat different tournament formats from SNGs, PKOs, bounties, hyper-turbos, and so on.

With all that said, I was wondering about whether deep-stacked tournament strategy can be applicable to cash games and what adjustments will have to be made between both formats. My current idea is to study cash games because they are generally deep-stacked much like some tournaments (though generally deep-stacked for only the first few levels). This way, I get a lot of practice playing deep-stacked in live cash games and when I'm in an area where tournaments are abundant, I can later transition into MTT strategy from ICM, stack sizes, non-linearity of chip value, etc.

To summarize, would studying live cash game poker better help me when I later get into MTT poker or will it potentially hurt me? Should I be studying deep-stacked tournament poker play to then use for cash games or just go for cash game strategy and then later go for tournament strategy?

In almost all tournaments exist antes... Not like in cash games...
Therefore, the strategy of the game is different even with large stacks of 100BB.

Even when the early stages of a tournament don't have antes, the strategy is still different? Could you please explain this further?

I feel the same way as well. I do plan on moving elsewhere in the future where tournament play (especially online) is accessible, but for the time being, just stuck with cash games around where I live. There are daily tournaments, but I don't think their structure makes them profitable.

Don’t forget you have to beat the rake in the cash game also.

So the rake is what also differentiates tournament preflop play from cash game play? I should go look into this.

If your goal is to engage in MTT poker, then it is important to study exactly the strategies applicable to this game format.
