Best Poker Advice for New Players

If you could go back in time to your first experiences playing poker, what would you tell your younger self?

One that I would share and wish I had learned earlier: Pay close attention to the words and actions of the other players at your table (live and online). A big part of this game is "playing the player" and not just the cards in your hand.

To get another hobby or only to play homegames with other total beginners/people u know.

Cant imagine someone who is completely new enjoying todays online climate with all the beraters in chat, stallers and mincashers in freerolls and all the micro pros on the lowest buy-ins already. Cash games online are basically dead for beginners imo.

Live in casinos i would mostly also not recommend to beginners. Too many weird degen people there in general, lots of berating too if one makes beginner mistakes and buy-ins mostly too high for beginners.

When I started over twenty years ago, poker was not that widely studied. I tried online poker at a suggestion with a starting bonus, he transferred $10 to me to try my hand at microrollels pokerstars. I oriented myself and graduated from pokerschooll. Wow a ticket (the first, not knowing this world of poker and not thinking about the future) Of course blocking the casino machines at the time 🙃 no impulse to insist (year won I go to have fun). The poker school ticket brought me another $10 👍👍👍. I used to play all night for the satisfaction of four dollars I think is always at the final table among the thousands of players in the tournament. I liked the variants from the beginning (I learned them by playing without instruction, just by playing, I got it from the flight) I was victorious again 👍.......
The point is that being a beginner you didn't face so many delicate situations that needed analysis, which didn't stop me from having confidence in going forward with a good (for me) game. always proving to me that I see the light of the final table.
I think that the most beautiful feelings: of hope, of the joy of the first dollar won, of the fever that you have confidently entering something new should not be hindered or clouded by someone's advice. They will orient themselves in their favor, and it is not good to jam them with advice that they may not like.
I got to be maybe a mascot who chatted with Daniel Negreanu at the table (too little), I wish them a lot of success and to make their way by taking only what is good and what I completely understand for them!

online poker is totally different kind of play then sitting down and playing poker with your friends or whoever.. don’t get me wrong. I enjoy playing poker online but you need to be free for at least a good 2 to 4 hours if you’re playing online in the tourneys.especially if you make it to the end or even halfway . but there’s nothing better than playing poker with a bunch of your friends ..talking sh*t and having a good time..and I even play with my adult kids and grandkids who are also also grown.. that puts the fun back into it .

I would have been much more aggressive with my bankroll while the online cash games were good and you could make millions just by playing relatively tight pre-flop and game-select. The post-flop leaks bad players had were ridiculous.

I was way overolled in the games I played.

I played mostly 5-10 limit and 100NL cash games and the games were super soft up till black Friday and also a few years after that on some sites.

I should also have played many more hours while the games were good (2003-2013) but "we" thought the money rain would last if not forever so at least a lot longer than it did.

Alternatively, I would have gone for SuperNova Elite on PokerStars by playing as many tables as possible (probably easiest to do in SnGs). Break-even play could give 100k every year in bonus.

So don't be afraid to go up in levels when you have 20-25 BI in NL Cash if you have the discipline to move down if you lose 5BI would have been my advice to myself 20 years ago. Plus games select and player-select even harder. Chase the fish (or even better whales).

I would say to myself : Wide your range, don't be so tight. If you play more hands your winning chances will increase.
And the most important : have fun, enjoy the game because it's just a game.
So never forget to have fun. As you only play micro or small buy-ins, your bankroll is not in danger, so ENJOY THE GAME !!!

Ylan, there will come a time in live cash games when you would swing-up more than 10X your bankroll, when it does, stop playing! Enjoy the moment & touch the grass. Don't reason out that you want to play more for fun because I can tell you now that you will pretty much loose them all & regret that you could have had more fun spending the rest of the time with family. This will happen in Singapore. Take this advise, young noob!

As to new players, I would emphasize on patience and studying. When at the table, never think about the outcome, just have fun playing.

Manage your bankroll. When I first got serious about playing, I had some big wins. Then, I went to Las Vegas for the wsop and spent too much of my winnings without recouping anything. It hurt my confidence and I wish I had chose which events to play a bit more judiciously.

I would tell my younger self and any new player today to learn the math of poker.
I think that would not only improve most peoples game play it would also improve
most new players mental game to learn what the math actually is...... it would definitely
cut down on the frustration a lot of new players feel with perfectly standard losses
being perceived as bad beats when in reality it's just poker👍

To not give it up again and only come back almost 10 years later. My first experience with online poker was around 2006, but I quickly stopped again and basically missed out on the entire poker boom, where possibly I could have made some real money. Today its much more difficult, and my first advice to new players would be to not expect, that they are going to get rich from poker, or even think about giving up their regular job.

My second advice would be to have fun. If we are not enjoying the game, and we are not going to get rich from it, then there are better things to do. Please dont become one of those guys, who whine about bad beats or claim, that the poker sites are most likely rigged. And please dont berate other people in the chat, because you think, they made a bad play (and got lucky).

Don't be too eager to get involved in a hand, If other players are throwing their chips away, chasing Straights and Flushes that rarely happen, you are gaining in the Pay table without playing a single card.
Patience is a Virtue, especially when it comes to Poker, and the Softly Softly approach always works in your favour.
Wait for the right hands, to start playing and if a hand is worth calling, It is also worth raising with.

For me, the best advice I could give would be to NOT rush. There are going to be times where you will see big satellites or a huge tournament that is outside of your bankroll that you simply should not play given what funds you do have. Stick to a bankroll management plan and know that patience and hard work will get you there eventually. This is a marathon, not a sprint and you risk going bust so fast by ignoring your limits.

My advice for new players:
1. Be patient, it is tough to get good hands in poker
2. Bankroll Management is critical, you will have extended runs of bad cards
3. Study and practice
4. Remember, this is fun!

Two things I would do >

Join Cards chat , and take their course and be active in the forums. That gives you a social aspect of the poker community.
Secondly, join Pokercoaching.com, and take their beginners course for both cash and tournament games. That will give you a solid basis to build your game on. Note: just get the Basic membership to begin with, the Premier level is for players who already know how to play and have experience, at this stage a beginner would be paying for access to information that a beginner would not know how to use or even know what is being talked about.
