It was the month before my 58th birthday and I thought it was about time I learnt how to play. I also thought I might be able to make some pocket money from the game, nothing too ambitious, maybe pay for a night out or two over a year. That may take till my 60th birthday.

Well my father and his father, along with two older brother's have always played home games. So even as a kid I guess I just came by in naturally.

it's down to D now. Used to think I could make money, but that proved to be a fantasy. Guess it's just a habit now. As in anything else it seems you really need money to make money. The bigger your stake the better your odds.

I started playing for the sheer enjoyment of it, then as I continued to play, I started seeing how the game goes beyond what cards you are holding - position, bet-sizing, reads on players, etc. Now, as a retired football coach, it provides an avenue of competitiveness that I no longer get from my job. The money I make is just icing on the cake.

I'd like to add: I love the way it keeps my aging mind working. I hope it puts off any alzheimer's I may have in my future.
