This is a discussion on What's your favorite poker quote? within the online poker forums, in the General Poker section; I love quotes and here I'd like to get some new ones. Like Helmuths "I can dodge bullets!" and the likes.
My personal quote is:
"Poker is a game of people. This is the most important thing to learn ... People ... and the strategy that you use against them. For poker, more than for any other game, you need to understand the opponents."
"Texas Dolly" aka Doyle Brunson, WSOP Champion 1976-1977.
My favorite poker quote would have to be. MY WORDS. ''if I can make you think that I think that you think that you have the best hand I have you beat. I repeat. that, if that can make you think that I think that you have the best hand I have you beat. Gotcha Good luck on the tables and as always. Have fun
So this isn't a poker quote, is was a conversation between a mathematician who specializes in sports and Neil deGrasse Tyson in a recent podcast that is very applicable to poker, if you are willing to convert and apply it.
“The way you’re going to win this game is by getting a little bit lucky, and you want to give the gods of luck as much chance as possible to help you. You want to increase what’s called the standard deviation in the score. You can’t move the average, but you can make it noisier.” – Matt Ginsberg
“You want to climb out to the wings of that distribution where you could have actually a chance of winning that game, as the underdog.” Neil deGrasse Tyson
“Yes.” --Matt Ginsberg
Which to me, in poker, after you have the fundamentals in theory down, is to study the fringe where you can put even the top "professionals" in a difficult and unfamiliar spot. The trick in poker is to know when, with what, and approximately how often to employ such niche strategies, because massive deviations can be blunderous. There must always be an appropriate balance in our ranges, but let's not look over the edge cases in theory, if we want any chance of destroying our opponent's in an otherwise break-even or losing game, because of the rake, or whatever.
