What does it mean - poker is not the same anymore?

Hello everyone! Poker Brotherhood, I would like to know your opinion on the phrase: "poker is not what it used to be." I understand that with the advancement of technology, the way information is transmitted has changed, but a large amount of poker literature was written earlier, and the strategies and mathematics - these "formulas" still work. I would appreciate any comments.

I've been playing poker for about 3 years, so it's hard for me to say what poker was like before, like 10 years ago. In recent years, in my opinion, the popularity of poker is only growing, and I think that this trend will continue. Maybe poker used to be different because there were fewer players and maybe the competition wasn't as tough as it is now.

With information traveling around as fast as it does today, everyone has access to a lot of different strategies to improve their game. Obviously, that has changed the level of play in poker. But, IMHO, the basics still work. And also, have your own strategy, which is a mix of tips from all the literature out there, and stick to it.

Maybe it means that someone is getting older faster than expected.

I guess before the internet it was more reading people than calculating odds. It’s also a lot more hyper and turbo than when I first started playing 15 years ago.

Hello, for me poker is still the same, with the difference that it is a broader field where there are great players, it is a bit hard to play it because there are many players who are playing well due to the number of poker courses and live events that are offered. There is a comparison to other years, but it is possible with effort, dedication to study, patience and good bank roll management, of course the mathematics remains the same, the strategies sometimes change but based on the basic strategies.

Previously, the average level of players was much lower, it seemed that not everyone knew the rules, now even at microlimits they already use programs and software - winning is becoming more and more difficult, many poker schools have opened and there are more bots

Back in the day when I started, it was in 1997 in Atlantic City. There was a card room at most of the casinos there and most of the games were 7 card stud. It was all cash games no tournaments. There was only one poker book out called Super System by Doyle. Nothing on the internet. They had maybe one or two tables with No limit hold em being dealt. About three years later limit hold em started taking over slowly taking over all the stud games. Then no limit tables started to be much more popular than the limit during early 2000s.

Back then you learned by buying in and playing. We had to play mostly just with your wits. There were lots and lots of bad players back then.

Now there is information everywhere. You can be better prepared now if you are a beginner then you could back then. You have all the odds and poker math all figured out for you now to memorize and make it easy to learn but back then you had to do this on your own if you wanted to get better.

Players are definitely better now because of technology but there are still lots of bad players. There is no reason why you can’t improve your game now, it just takes study away from the game when you are not playing.

This is from the series that the sky used to be bluer and the grass greener. Although, of course, the best times of poker are in the past.

I don't know what poker used to be like and why he says that, but now I'm happy with everything. The whole world is evolving, and the gambling industry is evolving too. And I think that in 10-20 years people will talk about the present time in the same way.

Guys, thank you for your comments. But I would like to ask about another aspect of this question: let's say a player is invited to a tournament after not appearing in the rankings or anywhere else for 10 years or more. And everyone starts saying things like, "Well, let's see what you can still do. Poker is not what it used to be in your days." I'm leading to the question of whether the pre-flop and post-flop strategies change or not. Is this belief that poker is not the same anymore based solely on that? After all, the tight-aggressive strategy is well explained in Doyle Brunson's book. Or is this statement based on the fact that there are now many hyper and turbo tournaments?

so everything is not the same as it was before, space satellites are far from being like Voyagers (although they are still very useful), the same can be said about poker, but only the deck of cards remains the same))

From ca 2003 to 2013 gambling sites literally gave away thousands of dollars a month in bonuses, rake-back, and freerolls.

That the players online were clueless, especially at limits at 100NL and under also made it super easy, barely an inconvenience, to earn easy money online.

Now people sit at 2NL and have GTO-solver help.

Those who can adapt will continue to make money from poker. Those who are unable to adapt will have to look for a new place in life. The main thing to understand is that change is already here, and it is better to accept it than to deny and protest. The whole romance of poker was that you put in a minimum of effort and get a lot of money. The freebie is over, the romance is gone.Only every year another problem is gaining momentum - bots. They are on all networks, it’s stupid to deny it.

Playing poker at home or w/friends was 5-card draw, when I was growing up. Stud was the top casino game. This was back in the 80's and 90's. Ever since "Rounders" and the Moneymaker effect hold'em has been the game to fast riches. And since there's a lot of plain ol' working folx who want to make $ and pay bills without breaking their backs for some schmuck, the game is even more full of actual "players" than just gamblers, imo. Because when you're actually trying to make some $ instead of just playing for the rush of going all-in to knock out a player the game takes on a whole new perspective and your play will take a paradigm shift.
I think this is why other variants of the game are paying better since more of the newbs are playing hold'em. A little less gamble and more pot-control can ease a players' mind in these games.
