I have bet the winning hand in this situation and taken a fair amount of abuse for it in a neighborhood game, and again in a local tournament.

Rather than defend my position to the complainers, I let them go on thinking I don't know better. The dumber my opponent thinks I am the better.

Well said. If your opponents don't respect your game then they won't expect you to make any real plays. Makes things waaayyy easier :)

But anyone who would say that checking it down is an unspoken rule of some sort is just misinformed. Actually saying "lets check it down" when another player is all in is considered collusion in most casinos and is completely illegal so there!

Why is that people bet when someone is all in and the side pot has nothing? your supposed to just check it down and try to knock the other players. I cant count the number of times a player bets, i fold then they just double, or triple up the player who is all in. Just moronic.
If I am not on the bubble and I can take out other player, you BET I'm gonna BET.:D

I agree with most of the responders, if the hand is good enough to call the all-in, why not bet it? I've had many hands like this where I lost to the all-in, but covered that and gained more by pushing the other player/players. Bet the cards if you have them!
