Okay I just think it's perverse to like "Lucky You" when sober. I still can't believe Huck threw the tournament like that. Oh I guess it's okay since it was just a freero...NO IT WAS THE MAIN EVENT!!! I wouldn't even be okay with throwing a freeroll though. It's the principle.

I'm not sure but I think they chose Eric Bana because his delivery's so bland, so blah, so monotoned. Clearly he's supposed to be an even more troubled version of Huck Seed, who's just a lot shorter, and apparently a whole helluva lot worse at poker. I still don't get what other chicks see in Eric Bana. It's okay cuz I don't get what they see in Patrik Antonius either.

I guess I just prefer people(not only actors) with a lot more zest and inflection in their voices. Come to think of it, that could explain my loathing of Arnold Schwarza-how-the-hell-do-you-spell-it? aka The Gubenator.

Then there's Drew Barrymore. Normally she can do no wrong. I mean, I'm hard pressed to find a movie where I didn't at least have a good enough time watching to warrant so much as downloading via questionable channels. "Lucky You'" wasn't even that good. Drew's so bad in it. She's doing the best she can with what they gave her, but they gave her caca, consequentially she's just slightly better than crap. I don't care how adorable her lisp is, or how sweetly she smiles, those things alone can't carry an entire movie.

Seriously, ask yourself if you'd throw the main event for your father who has pretty much been a deadbeat since you were a little kid. Now ask yourself if you really like poker. If you answered yes to both questions then you're lying to yourself.

I liked "Lucky You" with massive amounts of pain killers coursing through my system. Without the chemicals, the movie's just gross.

I'm sorry, but it's really that bad. I couldn't find any redeeming qualities. I was looking for them too. I normally love Robert Duvall and Drew Barrymore. Normally I love them enough to sit through Eric Bana. It says a lot when I couldn't love the movie even with two actors I normally enjoy watching.

I'm not surprised, Trig! I watched it again too from a less sentimental, more objective perspective and and is my face ever red--that movie is really, really bad. I really appreciate your straightforwardness. And yes, it could have been good. What a shame.

The good news is that all the others you rented will certainly be better!

Hey, I'm just glad you made a list of movies for me. Up next is "No Limit" it should be here tomorrow.

The documentary? I'll be interested in what you have to say. Believe me, I wasn't sentimental at all while watching this one :).

One other thing. I think we're all in agreement that truly excellent poker movies are few and far between. So my question is this:

If some film mogul called you and asked your opinion of what the perfect poker flick would be like, what would you say?

Just off the top of my head, I would like to see a really strong female player as one of the lead actors. I would like to see a film that depicted "the life" in a compelling yet compassionate way. A good story line escapes me though...

I totally agree about Casino Royale--the poker portrayed in that flick was close to if not totally embarassing.

I disagree, I think it was very realistic.

I've been in many games where often the winning hands were :

p1 - Flush
p2 - Full House
p3 - Full House
p4 - Straight Flush

I wouldn't have a strong female player as a lead actor. Strong poker players are almost by definition bad actors. And some of the best would be incapable of showing any subtle emotion that's required in an acting role. They're just too used to supressing those things.

I would however have a strong female player as the lead character. A bio-pic. For some reason I'm positive Dakota Fanning could do an amazing job in "Tight! The Jennifer Harman Story", so I'm weird. There's just something eerily full-force about that little kid and she's got the blonde hair and big blue eyes to boot.

"Texas Dolly the Doyle Brunson story" would be good too. Okay Doyle's not female, I might have alluded to his being a woman by accident. Just to clarify, he's a man. It'd be great if he'd dish about you before you're dead though. First ya gotta die then he'll dish. On the bright side I'm starting to think he'll outlive everyone. That when the apocolypse comes there'll be nothing left but Cher and Doyle playing heads up(Doyle will totally kick her butt for the first couple of hundred years), with rats and roaches scurrying around.

Not for nothing, but "Phil Gordon" could be easily played by Nicholas Cage. That'd be pretty cool. Wonder how high Nick's lifts would have to be.

Ooh who'd play Phil Hellmuth? I'm thinking Kevin Spacey cuz he's tops at playing hard to like, whiny, jerks(some would say a feminine hygiene product, but not me no sir). Anyway, Kevin Spacey could do it, but he'd still need those darn lifts, or they'd have to hire dwarves to fill out the cast.

My ideal movie exists I just can't find it. It's the documentary with Gus. Apparently John Juanda's in it as well. It wouldn't have to be Gus mind you, just any high level pro with cameras following them around and them getting their brain picked in an intelligent way(yeah that goes out to PokerNews.com which mostly features interviews made out of marshmallow). The thing is, this movie exists. I'd have it if I lived in Denmark. Why oh why couldn't I have been born in Europe where non-American made films don't get completely ignored unless they're beyond spectacularly good?

I'm really excited about the possibility of "Rounders II" as well as a film based on the book by Jim McManus titled "Positively Fifth Street".

Almost bet 10 to 1 that the rounders 2 will be a flop.
Just dont think it can live up to the first one.

"Positively fifth street" a movie?

This might be interesting.
I read the book. Not sure how it would translate to the big screen though. Would have to check that out.

No offense but I disagree about having a female as the lead actor, it wouldn't feel right. Now a hot female in a partnership with a male who work together would be great...but if its solo, I'd prefer the male, as poker is a mostly a mans game and would fit the gambling lifestyle role better.

Man if I had the loot I'd take you up on your bet. Like if triple or quadruple digits meant nothing to me, I'd totally take you up on it.

A lot of sequels have surpassed originals in quality and even box office profits. Many surprised a lot of people who thought the originals couldn't be surpassed in quality let alone box office. I don't have numbers handy, but it's been done on multiple occasions I know for sure.

Here's one where I gotta go with the underdog. For instance, Matt Damon, who would surely have some sort of back end deal for the thing. I can't see him signing up for a quick buck on a less than stellar sequel. He's got too much to lose.

All they need is a good script and for Matt to get a few of his associates/friends in on it as advisors. The advisors could easily make it better than the original because the original though great is still flawed.

From there they either get the same director(for continuity's sake) or get one who goes in a completely different direction stylistically.

From there it's very doable. Movies aren't diamonds. Flaws mean that yes it can be improved upon. On top of that, I for one would like to know what's going on with Worm. Did anyone finally get around to smacking Teddy KGB for splashing the pot? Will Teddy KGB get an amazing reputation with the ladies based on what he can do to a sandwich cookie?

These are questions that need to be answered. If not through a movie, then at least through fan fiction.

Lark, I watched "No Limit" if I was going to make a documentary about poker, I would have done it way different than that!!! They lady drove me nuts. Show more of the poker. All it was is "Oh that's a lucky seat I got, I'm excited, hope I make the final table!!? two hours later... "I was so unlucky, I had two draws yada yada and I'm out." eh oh well, you don't know if you don't watch.

I positively, absolutely agree Trigga! Beyond driving me nuts, I was actually embarassed for that gal.

Do you know of any decent poker docu-dramas out there?

Clealry, the field is wide open for quality stuff.

Seems that everyone's overlooked or not heard of the movie "Shade" staring Sylvester Stalone, Melanie Giffith, Jamie Fox & Stuart Townsend. Theme of the movie . . . CHEATING

Lucky you is the best recent film that centres around poker imo. A great cast and the poker scenes are good with many pros featured like Negreanu, Farha, Greenstein, Harman. (best of all - it doesnt spoon feed you like casino royale).

The director of 8 mile made Lucky You. It's a very good movie compared to any poker-related movies out there. I think the best is Rounders. Rounders is classic. Shade isn't really poker movie. It's more of hustla's lives.

I just watched Deal yesterday. I don't know why, it looks like Joe Cada's movie.

Exactly Oz. If you're looking for the most unrealistic hands you'll ever see...watch Casino Royale. The best part of the movie is the chase scene.
