In chess (also math cmpetitions or e-sports) you need only skills, no luck, while in pokers, beside all skills, the factor luck is playing a roll. So in my oponion poker should not be considered as a sport.
And in football? A ball flying past hits a defender and rolls into the goal, or in tennis, once it hits the net, it rolls to the opponent’s side. Very often this moment is decisive. Isn't this luck? There are many examples. And for some reason, luck smiles more often on Nigreanu, Phil Ivey and the like, but on you and me very rarely and on little things. Any confrontation in itself is sport and poker is not an exception.

I've always wondered this, I mean ESPN is a sports channel right? When you consider darts is not even recognised as an official sport then to say poker is a sport is kind of pushing it, although it sure sure feels like one with its competitive aspects and mammoth prizes.

I think whether it is considered a sport depends on one's definition and cultural perspective...

Yes I am pretty sure poker is also a kind of sport in which skill and luck both matter the most.

Of course poker is a sport.
Compared to video games, player has to stay alive by the end (stack of chips), to develop a good strategy, a strong mindset aaaaaand hold them all

Yes, I see many members calling that 'sports have to involve physical activity' but this isn't the case nowadays and I'll mention a few: number 1 is of course chess... than we have: bowling, Cue sports(snooker, Billiards, Pool), golf, archery... in some of this mentions you'll have an edge if you have a physical advantage vs your opponents but it's the same for poker too and that's why many poker experts advise us to pay attention to both mental and physical health... about the 'luck' component- everything in life is surrounded by this component and like other members mentioned, this 'luck' is an important factor in all the other sports too but I have to agree that in poker- especially short term- you can be successful with just luck and no skill... Still, overall in poker you need different skills that you need to 'train' for long periods of time, has an element of competition and this (IMO) makes poker a sport...

poker in the short term is a game of chance, but in the long term it is a game of mental skill, you will always win if you start to study and work hard.

No.

Can Gin Rummy be considered a sport? Then, by all means, poker shouldn't either.

Simple like that.

This is a very confusing question, as poker is originally a game of chance, however, as the moves require some skill and study, it can indeed be called a sport, even more so if the game is in person.
The online game is very corrupt, because although the newsstands say that the game is not rigged, there is a situation that hurts the sporting character, which are the Buts, the help tools that many newsstands accept, this makes the sports profile fall. by land, because giving an undue advantage to those who have the tools and the Bots are not human and are not subject to emotions and distracting errors.

Poker allows you to choose the hands you want to play. The difference that makes you a good poker player is more related to emotional control and practice. In this case, I consider it a sport.

I think yes. I consider poker a sport because in poker players play against each other just like in any other sport. There is a dealer who monitors the rules of the game; in any other sport, this is the judge. For example, if we consider a casino, then the player plays against the house, and the mathematics of any game initially weighs in favor of the casino. There, it is not possible to be a winning player at a distance, but in poker the winner is the one who has more experience, skills and who is better able to control his emotions.

Yes, poker is a sport like any other. Because you'll need to study and exercise to achieve your best performance at the tables. I hope that in the future poker will be recognized worldwide as a mentally challenging sport.

I don't think so, because the chance of winning doesn't depend 100% on me or my team, but on a good percentage of luck.

Hello,
Can Poker, boht version live and online be considered a sport? if yes why
I think poker can be considered a sport. If chess or computer games are considered a sport, why is poker not a sport? For me, poker is a sport, it is a competition of intelligence, logic, tactics and strategy of players, their experience, discipline and patience.

I believe that any game can be considered a sport. As long as there is a tournament and it is regulated.
We just have to be careful with a sedentary lifestyle, because not everyone uses the physical part.
