i dont think playing on playmoney tables is good practise. Playing in a tournament with a $1 buy in to win real money is a totally different game to people playing to win playmoney. By playing playmoney you wil get better at versing allincowboys and will not be prepared to take on poker players who know how to play

The biggest problem is not with play money. The problem is the fact that the low limit play money games are like crap shoots. People play them just so they can play bigger buy in play chip games so they think there better. If your lucky enough to have a lot of play chips the games are as good as play money, however, the low limit one's are very donkish and can hurt your poker game. I personally like playing play chips, its a challenge and you have to change your game. Some will argue the other way but I think that if you can master play chips you can master poker

I think you get out of it what you put into it. If you go in with a plan and resist the evils, it can work for practice playing. Falling in line with the players who just want to 'play' is one way bad habits develop (imo). Don't see every flop just because 'it's only play chips and I can reload'. Don't chase draws 'just to see'. Don't let the 'any two cards can hit' mentality get you. It's a safe place to work on the math too. You won't get many opportunities to work on more advanced skills since many/most of the lower stakes players aren't taking it seriously but there are some students of the game, even in play money. It's a frustrating place, but it ain't all bad.

I think the play chips can be beneficial, but there are a lot of poor players making poor plays. However, there are a lot of poor players chasing straights, flushes, and runner-runner draws at the micro stakes as well.

If someone is playing cards or any gambling, they would be wise if they are playing with an amount they are willing to lose. The more willing you are to sacrifice your buy in, the more likely you might be to chase or make other poor poker decisions. Its real easy not to care about losing a dollar or two, so those stakes might not be all that much better than a 10K or 100K play chip buy in. Those play chips took some time and effort to earn and could have more "value" to the player than a buck...

Maybee I have a problem, but playing with real money causes me a stronger adrenalin.
I like freerolls, sometimes I play 3 or 4 in same time, playing automaticly exeptions is when I reach final table.

play for play chips help you learn the basics but if it affects it so you play real money hands which hardly would play and then also in playchips is more difficult to read to your players because there are people who bluff a lot of chips because they are lies.

The other day started with a play chip step4 ticket on FTP , and won 3 sng's in a row.

The play wuz incredibly soft, and now I'm waiting for step 7 and a shot at becoming a playchip millionaire and a chance to play in a real $ freeroll.

There really isn't all that much to for me to get excited about w/play chip tournaments anymore though.

Does anyone feel that there is a problem with playing with play chips vs. real money? I find that for myself I make a lot of mistakes with play chips that I wouldn't really make with real money, and I'm wondering if these mistake could create bad habits long turn. Any Thoughts on this?

If you can't beat play money tables, you won't be able to beat real money tables either. Play money tables are fine for learning the basics, the players are worse so you can still win while making more mistakes, and of course it's free. However, just like any skill based activity or hobby you will have to fix mistakes and bad habits as you move up levels and face tougher competition if you want to keep winning.

Your post reminds me a little of players who move up to higher stakes using the reasoning that the low stakes players are too fishy to win against. Fix your bad habits before you move up.

Edit: didn't realize this was a three year old thread!
