Different strategies for playing live and online. I prefer to play online for more tables, and can monitor the performance of opponents, its graphics, etc..

Where I live there are no casinos, but there are a few poker cliubs so the atmosphere is different.
Live poker is a lot more in your face so to speak and although still fairly new here there are a few accomplished players.
In live play here, you get to see the poorer players pretty quickly and can usually relieve them of there chips in a short amount of time.
Personally, I prefer onlone play as it lates me play and meet players from around the world which under normal circumstances we would never meet, plus that you can play many more tournies or cash games at the same time if you prefer.

Live Poker:

  1. Game is played at a much slower pace, less hands dealt....
  2. Cannot multi table
  3. One does not have the advantage of using HUD's
  4. Better for socialization because you are seeing actual ppl not avatars
  5. Quicker cash out, sometimes instant if u r playing with cash not chips
  6. Less distractions because you aren't playing at your own convenience
  7. Play is limited to ppl at your particular geographical location
  8. Can get physical, one cannot trash talk and hide behind computer screens
  9. Smaller player pools and smaller monetary sizes (generally speaking)
  10. Smaller selection of games

online poker --- the opposite of everything I just listed and more, i'm too lazy to list more..... Personally, I much prefer LIVE poker and the variance is quite less live too....

True poker is only when played in real time in normal casino. I like the atmosphere duing playing on poker table and for me it is more simple than playing in online version of poker..

You can't show up at the casino for a game when naked.

It seems that it won't be a problem in the future
with the direction of where the mankind is moving

This is completely the opposite, online has way less variance because you can multitable to help even it out and also can play much lower stakes than the standard 1-2, 1-3.

According to me online poker is much better than live poker. Yes, it takes a considerable amount of work to reach the point to become a better online player but online poker having more Earning power then live poker. Online poker is better than live poker on following terms:
Retardation, Health, The commute, The chicks, Strategy.

I was gonna say that you can't play live poker in just a bathrobe. But then I remembered a story from one of my casino dealer friends, where some did exactly that... so yeah, that's not actually a difference.

Online poker is the poker game which I can play online, online poker is greater than live poker, online poker will take considerable amount of work to to reach the amount which was comfortably profitable for you. You can't have enough volume in live poker to find the exact expectation for your life time. Live poker has having high risk.

Sorry, but this is just silly. Absolutely it takes longer to play, say, 50K hands live as opposed to online. But to say that you could never in a lifetime play enough live poker to know whether you're profitable or just lucky? Crazy.

I'm thinking that there is online play and live play.
Online play is you sitting in your chair in front of your machine while live play is sitting at a table with a group of people and someone is manually dealing out the cards.

Personally a fan of live play since table chat and body expressions engage me in the game more fully even if live play is slower while online I do have a tendency to have drifting thoughts and multitasking since the game is just not as exciting. It is a tad more difficult to arrange a live game compared to an online game however.

In my opinion live poker is more interesting than online poker because if you play live you are more focused and you can see your opponent's reactions and emotions and you take better decisions. In online poker you don't know against you play, you don't know many things about your opponents and another bad thing in online poker is that you can't stay concentrated because you have the TV, or the phone in your room, so you do many activities in the same time.

Which do you prefer to play, Live or Online?

I'm curious if people enjoy it more while playing live, or if you find it just as good to play online? I think live would be much more exciting but also much more nail bitingly nerve wrecking!
But since I have no live experience I thought who better to ask than the CC community!

I personally have more fun playing live.

That said; I prefer grinding MTTs online and Cash live; in fact I almost never play cash online and not that many MTTs live.

They are both fun. It seems that live is way easier than online and its a fun atmosphere. You can't curse out the screen though when its live lol
Online is fun too, some days its nice to just relax at the computer and play some cards, maybe multitask. Whichever.

You can really see the differences of the two by playing long enough to live and online.

Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

I completely agree that both live and online poker have their own advantages and disadvantages. The primary reasons for either could be: time commitment, convenience, bankroll/budget, social aspect, travel, legality, information gathering, types of reads (tells, betting patterns), etc. Another thing to consider is game type...many brick and mortar casinos and card rooms might not spread as many types of games such as Stud, Omaha, HORSE, etc. Also, online tournaments are starting all the time to be able to fit it into your schedule as opposed to clearing your day for a live tournament that could take all day long or be over in a matter of minutes.
Personally, I think it is both fun and important (for learning the game) to be competent in both formats.

Live tournaments require players to psychological endurance, as well as the ability to "read" the cards on the opponent himself an opponent that is not so important in online poker. However, recognizing the importance of the psychological moment of the game offline, players do not attach much importance to the skills of the analyst when it comes to their personal experience. Many players can unknowingly give strength of your hand through facial expressions or gestures. Good players always keep watch over their rivals and to notice their non-standard behavior.

hello all just read through some of the posts on this thread and tend to
agree with the live camp on this. I have played live poker between
friends with s&g format 1 buy in just so nobody lost their house or
car. This was before online poker was even invented and their was very
little poker tourneys in casinos then either. So after years of playing online
small tourneys and s&g,s . I decided to try a few live tourneys again ,
only 30 to 40 players 10 pounds in top 3 in the money. I played in 7 of
these placed 2nd twice, 3rd once, 1st twice but split the pot on one of
these due to having to leave early. I dont know if the online poker has
homed my skills for live play or I had just missed the buzz of seeing someones
face twitch like mad when i called their bluff. I will make an effort to play more
live games but its not easy to always make these games and online is anytime :D

I started playing the game live at local country clubs and friends houses and I much prefer the live game. Real chips, real cards, my opponents sitting in front of me..it's how poker was meant to be played. And while I'm not savant at it, there is alot of reading of body language, if they are talking, what they are saying, etc. Looooove the live game.

live play is best

I personally prefer live cash games and tourneys as opposed to online. Reasons for this is you can pick up more of the psychological aspects of the game when you are playing live. There are things your mind will subconsciously do which are tells that give info away about the cards you are holding. How do you think Daniel Negranu is so good at telling what 2 cards people have, this is do to him being able to read your body language. There is so much more info to pick up on playing live poker and you can use this to your advantage in the bigger pots you play as well as picking when to achieve a well timed bluff.

While online poker there are some tells such as timing tells and bet sizing tells, these tells are not as effective because some people will bet big when they are bluffing and when they have the stone cold nuts. Online poker is still fun but I have a hard time picking up on when people have strong hands or when they have weak hands.

In live poker when I'm playing with weak players sometimes I can tell them exactly what to cards they are holding just by the way they are acting or what there body language is showing. Also I am 21 years old so when I play live no one gives me credit for a real hand if I haven't played with them before. They think I'm just another young gun blasting away at pots trying to steal and this pays off big when I have a real hand. This is why I like live play better.
