For the basics and software familiarization playing for chips is enough, and for tournaments there are freerolls. To say that spending $200 to find "flopomania" was an investment sounds like rationalizing to me.

Even for knowledge, one doesn't have to invest any money initially as there are a lot of free articles and pdf version of books or at least parts of them on the net, reading those first would be a more conservative approach. Once you familiarize yourself with the free information you are more likely to purchase a book that will cover the information you want to receive as not all books cover the same type of information, and even then, purchase a used version from Amazon or Ebay at a fraction of the cost, not a new one.

What i am trying to say is that you need to lose some money initially to gain experience and adjust with that particular type of game from where you can make an U-turn and win. initial loss might be an investment.
