Cool thread...it got me thinking of distractions and how they change the game I'm playing and why/when I'm looking for the distraction. I primarily play live poker so the boredom gets real...real fast. Headphones and music are my goto when, this is about the only way I seem to be able to play without making huge mistakes. I actually like putting them on (bose noise cancellation) with no music and just focus on the game at hand. I have found that there is so much to be seen that purposely distracting myself is just not good for my goal (win lots and lots of mullah!) For a while i used to take my
ipad with me and watch movies, spots etc.etc. I found though this was not good for my win rate, even when i think i see everything going on i have realized that i'm missing crucial information. Now i just try to watch games on TVs at the casino (or home game) but never something I want to watch...only so I can tune out when it's a hand that I dont care about.
Playing online (cash)...I now just rely on a HUD...that said i only play low stakes online. I watch movies, and twitch steamers playing poker etc. Here i dont feel the edge loss is too bad, I won't do it during tourneys (online or live).
I don't play for a living, but I want to be as good as I can...so now whenever I find myself bored with the game I just get up and leave. I try to force myself to play only when I want to play.
