I dont have a very well poker situation, but if you have one positive ROI to wins 700 dolars for month with consistency, would you fire yourself to live of poker??
I think that I could indeed win that by playing what I like if and in my case of one since my work is unfair and I would earn almost the same

For me it is a hobby and I dont think that is the for people like us here (hobby players) can be a way to earn money.
I think the same since much of the tournaments lasts hours and I have come to perform all in even though I had a lot to gain and the time I had did not allow me !!

If youre not making 80k a year keep your day job. Consistent paychecks and health insurance is too good to let go of.

$700 a month would be a little bit low for me. I've long had it in mind that I would turn full pro if I could make an equivalent to $20 an hour. Of course, considering I only play tournaments, going by hourly isn't a thing I could probably do in any case so it's not actually going to happen. XD

generally not pokerstars and more or less a second job, you should never quit your job if only you don’t become a poker pro, get sponsored and win lots of money, most people play poker for money, and don’t stop make money !

In my case, about 500 dollars would be enough for me to stop working, I hope I can get to one day:D

1000 dollars are fine to me, but thinking about the future I prefer save at least more 200 per month to investment.

I need to make 25 bucks a day and 750 bucks a month and it covers everything I need. Its not going to be a lavish life but, It'll be decent and I'll have money for rent, food, wifi, transportation, clothes, meds...etc

In 5 years from now I'm gonna quit my job and turn to playing poker for a living and of course in this 5 years it'll be lots of preparation and lots of reading, playing and improving. By then I'll raise a 10 000 bucks bankroll plus a some money to get me living for a year. I'll play 1/2 and 250 bucks buy in and 10 000 gives me 40 buy ins. Sounds crazy but, I can't imagine myself continuing a 9 to 5 job for the rest of my life. I wanna live my own way and be my own boss even though where I come from there aren't many who've chosen this poker path cause everybody thinks its just pure luck.

When you work at work, you have medical insurance, and also you earn money for retirement !!! I think that these factors should be considered when you plan to earn only in poker !!!

However much you make right now add 30k to it and if you make that per year playing poker you can quit your job.

I was once ask me, "how much is your time worth?" Do the math thinking about it, and see if you think you can live with how much you earn or if you want more ... If you have an underemployment that pays below what you earn in poker and believe that if you had more free time you could improve it, take a chance, but remember bad things exist in poker too hahahaha

I cannot imagine that I can live on poker in the Netherlands. The standard of living here is quite high. So you don't get away with $ 1500 or $ 2000 dollars a month. So it really depends on the country where you live.

For lifetime quit from the job I guess as my calculation about 1M$ in cash.
In the banks they give 0.45% on 80.000 grand deposited in period for 5 years.
You can't withdraw your money from the bank, just in a few situations they ranked.
That's include death on your parents, children, or wife/husband, so only in extreme the withdraw is allowed. You will be without your cash lets say for 5 years.
You can risk and invest in something, but this is the safest way to get money, in any condition you could get, lets say corona time like this year.
Money would be almost 100% sure, war etc could close the banks but we are speaking for leading banks running in every country, so is very low risk for you losing your deposited money.
Lets say you deposit 800.000$ and with that % you will get = 3600$ per month.
You will have left still 200.000$ for you family, travel the world without job and risk.
Sounds nice right? It is very very nice, to be able to earn money without lifting a pen from the table and all that with NO RISK
They say money goes on money, or its really hard to earn the 1st 1 million.
Everything after that is easy if you know what are you doing.
Bank will work with your 800K and create maybe 5X more with credits to other.
If you could live that lifestyle with no extreme luxury, you will be set for life period
5 years are 60 months = 60x3600 = 216.000$
So for period of 5 years you will earn over 200K and life good not so fancy.
Extend that period on 10 years and you will get even more % from the big banks.
Ahhh man, when I just remember 2 years ago when I was so unlucky, with just one step from 2.2million $, now everything would be different, but we STILL fight for it

Hello.
If you manage to earn $ 700 every month by playing poker, then you should keep doing it. This is a good result that most players strive for.

I would quit my job if I could earn poker stably from $ 1000
To do this, I think we need a BR of about $ 10-15k so that you can play the more serious MTT and cash games.

I think I could do it while playing only at 5nl cash tables (maybe?). I've actually thought of doing this for a 'challenge'. (it'd have to be once the weather gets colder here though... & would need to make some side bets so all that time could be worth it)

I am currently working at trying to do it in micro MTT's

Like any business you need working capital, or a bankroll to fall back on for downswings. I would say you need to have 50-100 BBs of bankroll, and about 6 months of living expenses saved before you could even consider quitting your day job. What does that look like?

For me, if my wife and I were to divorce. For me to cover bills I would need about 2.2K-3K a month depending if I kept the house or not. 13.2K-18K in personal savings....

I'm making about 4K a month currently with everything I do. Since I can realisticly make about 5-7BBs per hour on avg. Without doing the math means that I would have to grind 1000NL 40 hour weeks to keep up with my income now. So I would need about 15K in my personal savings, and 50-100K in my working capital or bankroll to strictly play and keep the same level of income I currently have. Assuming there was a 1000NL game avaliable to play for 40 hours a week.

AND that would assume you can win at that same winrate on those tables. (for me, I think I'd be fortunate to come away from a 1k nl table making -7BB/100... but I suck)

It depends on the country, in my country with 500 dollars a month you live well.

depends on what part of the world you live and how you envision your future (needs, wants, goals).

It amazes me to hear how people can live on <$1,000 /mth. :) Yesterday I read about a guy (poker player) who had been living off of $250/mth in Thailand while playing 25nl

Hmm... maybe I should look into moving ... somewhere that has a warm ocean :) ... a deserted beach... a small cabin ... and a fantastic internet connection (lol) :)

Where I live (& I live pretty frugally & humbly) it used to be very cheap compared with other parts of the country (canada). I had an apt. that cost me only $375/mth & was a HUGE 1bdrm, over 750 sq.. ft. ... heat included! 20yrs. ago you could rent a small house here for $500/mth... but things have changed dramatically just over the past few years.. now a small house rents for $1,200 to $1,500 (I am talking SMALL).
My place is on a few acres of land, up from the bank of a big river (Columbia river). It is nothing special but the location is quite nice :) I pay $1,200/mth.
With food, internet, gas, insur., etc. for me & my partner we're up to ~$2,500/mth :(
I'm afraid I am currently unable to make this much from poker :(
I am fortunate to have other stable income... and poker is just a hobby (sort of)

First, figure what your hourly is. Once you have your hourly profits number down, then you're able to compare and contrast.

You need to consider 3 things? Bankroll, Bankroll, oh and Bankroll.

I used to be self employed and even when things were going perfect I would not take time off, because at the end of the day if I hit a snag I could have been off the road without any means of providing for my family.

It is all very well if you can earn enough from Poker to provide a living for yourself, But what would you do if you had an accident or became ill and you couldn't play.

This Covid 19 has cost a lot of professional Poker players a lot of money, not because they became ill but I bet a lot of their patsy's did and being in lock-down would not have helped.

I was never happy unless I had enough Cash in the bank to keep my family for at least 6 months without me having to work, and believe me it is hard work.

That is a great goal that all of us who love this game would like to enjoy, to be able to dedicate to this professionally, that requires a lot of study! Good smoke community!
