$20000 a year playing poker is equivalent to about $27000 in a normal job because you don't have to pay income tax remember.
yeah ok taxes is obvs a huge plus but u dont get health insurance(asuming your from the US and not a country with universal healthcare),no sick days, no job security.
You do get to set your own hours witch is obvs another plus but the best time to play is usualy Friday night-Sunday night so u can take drunks/weekend warriors money and thouse are usualy the time when u would want to spend with family/friends/GF/BF ect.
Dno but i rather make less at a job with a secure pay check then a litle more at poker with no security.

As for OPs question the answer is 42...

I have a very meager government pension that amounts to about 6.5k(US) a year.
I supplement that with poker winnings. Poker is all i do anymore. Does that make me a pro?:confused::confused::):):)

professional
adj. engaging in some activity as a remunerated occupation.. ..someone who engages in an activity (esp. a sport) to earn money

Thousands of them , and if you think about PRO players online, we have tens or even hundreds of thousands pro players.

Count me in, I'm sort of broke like those above and don't play to lose money, so I am being meagerly remunerated (gotta love it)... so whatever number you arrive at OP, add 1.

(110011+1)

Ask the question a different way. How many persons report on the census form that they are professional poker player or gamblers. This data should be available somewhere, I just do not have the time to search for it.

I doubt that there are an awful lot. I'd put it at 5000 tops who consistently make a living at poker in any given year, but there could be more-- or less. I would agree with the definition of pro as someone who makes his or her primary income from poker. But there are a lot of rich people who play for fun and make what others would consider a nice living.

Looking at OPR, there are less than 1000 people of the half-million plus who play tourneys that make more than $17K profit in tourneys. (That amount is a bit misleading, but I suppose it can be used as a ballpark.) I don't really know how to search PTR to figure out online ring stats. There's really no way to know who, aside from the name pros, is out there making a living at B&M -- I figure every casino has a few regulars at least. The question is this: who makes a consistent living, and who goes bust regularly?

I would not want to be a pro, exactly. On the other hand, it would be handy for tax purposes... But trying to grind out a living, with variances and rake sounds just grueling. When you need to make your monthly nut in profits... wow, the downswings must be excruciating. So I assume that many people try it out, fail and move on to something more stable.

What curious if anyone knew where the information from post #16(Redee) or where the information was gathered from?
