that's the percentage of lefties in the world :D

so how many left handed poker pros are there then? hahahaha

and what would happen if the earth stopped and started spinning in the opposite direction?

none of us will ever truly know the answer to these questions.

I know a lot of people who only earn that much where I live, working full time, or slightly more or slightly less.
You must live in a very rich area if you think noone lives on that.

I know there are a lot of people who live on less than that. I couldn't do it now with my mortgage and bills. Sorry I made the comment.

there are easily tens of thousands who try to make a living playing poker, most of which are not successful. Just look at Vegas alone and think how many of those people try to make a living playing poker

A very talented yet unprofessional individual :).

Good call Kenzie. PH needs to work on his etiquette fer sher.

If you had seen his behavior in the last NBC Heads Up Championship you'd have seen he's trying to turn a new leaf. He took his victories and his eventual defeat against Elky without any outbursts. He even mentioned in interviews during the tournament that he was actually trying to get a handle on his temper and change for the better.

Lets see if he can keep it up

:bom:

I have a very meager government pension that amounts to about 6.5k(US) a year.
I supplement that with poker winnings. Poker is all i do anymore. Does that make me a pro?:confused::confused::):):)

Depends on their salary. It this someone earns $500k at his job and $200k at poker, than no. If he earns $50k at his job, than probably yes, but he should quit his job anyway.

And it's not strictly about earnings. A student who lives on poker income but studies full time is still primarily a student in my book, not a poker pro. How much time you spend on each activity is a pretty huge factor.

Good Points.
BUT.... I play freerolls for 12hrs. per day, I make about enough to buy 1 pack of smokes per week. I don't work... I'm on a disability for chronic illness (<< I Think there's alot of us who play poker,.. oh yah.. & illness is not from smoking.... although for sure it doesn't help any).
Am I a pro?

In regards to OP's question... or guesstimate.... I would think that 5,000 is such a low estimate that it would not be even nearly close. I would 'guess' that it would be far more than 10x that many or perhaps 20x as many who are playing professionally just 'online'. As far as world-wide live pros go.... wow... idk... ALOT!! (obviously not just the tourney circuits... as this would be a very small percentage of them). Count up all the cites in NorthAmerica with poker rooms where there's regular grinders on the cash tables..... then guess that number for the rest of the world....

Final answer (asked the audience... phoned a friend)... I'd say... hmm...
a) 5,000
b) 50,000
c) 100,000
d) umm.. no f'n clue.. probably LOTS!!!

I pick 'd'.

I doubt its hundreds of thousands.
Sure there are hundreds of thousands and probably millions who try to become pros but are there really that many who do make enough to live off.

It has to be basically your modus vivendi to be a real pro. I think there are more than 15000.

so how many left handed poker pros are there then? hahahaha

and what would happen if the earth stopped and started spinning in the opposite direction?

none of us will ever truly know the answer to these questions.

Depending on the general number of pros (as descibed before) it will be between 10 % and nearly 50% depending on age, re-education, religion and location.

If the earth stopped immediately we would continue at the speed we had before (inertia), which - depending on the position on the surface - whould be rather devastating for our health. At the equator the angular velocity is roughly 1225 km/h.:eek::eek:

It is quite unlikely that the world changes its spinning direction, though - so we are safe regarding that. :D:D:D

To the OP: there are plenty of them - and many more think that they are pro, without really being one (as described before).

who can live on 20k a year?

One needs to define the difference between living and existing.

Heck one can exist on SS income only. But, are you really living at an income of that level.

Is one not 'living' if one doesn't have all of life's amenities? I would hazard a guess that for some 'living' might mean being able to sustain physical existence for mere dollars whereas others might be spending $100K per month and really not be 'living' at all. << big difference

$20000 a year playing poker is equivalent to about $27000 in a normal job because you don't have to pay income tax remember.
That wouldn't be considered a bad salary at all where I live.
Unemployment is like 25% round here and loads of people only get paid $18000 - $22000 even office jobs.
And I can't get a job either by the way even though I have a Maths degree.

It all depends on the individual.

20k a year may or may not be a level of income you would want.

(20K a year would go a long way in Thailand!!)

. . . but keep in mind they always have to put aside alot of cold hard cash to continue to get in the games every hour, every day. Any profit has to be put back into the game like a business. I'm sure if they file taxes like a business they would come out ahead likewise.

I'd say most professional gamblers practically live in the casinos (or pool halls or what ever game they fancy) and that is the life they love - it's not just an existence when it's your passion.
