- one guy (good friend) made a living playing heads up large stakes at UB for 18months- easily made enough to live in London
Was his name potripper? :p

the big money is in live tournaments/ big online tournaments so this is the only way I would do it (moving up cash limits sounds good, but at some point you're bound to come a cropper?)
I disagree about 500%, live tourneys are crapshoots, even the live mtt guys play cash because that's generally where the solid money is. Obviously there is still a ton of skill in tourneys and it is possible to make a living on them, but you can go insane. The variance is just so incredibly high the difference between a 6 figure score and only making like 1k could be one coin flip, whereas in cash you can make much steadier money. I don't know what a cropper is but there are very few mtt pros and even less big live mtt pros. On the other hand there are hundreds if not thousands of online cash pros.

I know dealers do not like to publicize their pay (cause Im sure they are afraid people may stop tipping or hold back), but back when I hung out with a few several years ago...they used to tell me miniumum for a full-time dealer was about $50K/year in any kind of active room.

I really havent inquired much about it last couple years, so the min may have gone up or down lately.

You're tipping culture in America is bizarre in the extreme.
In the UK its actually against the rules of the house in every casino I've ever been to for any dealer to take tips, and they'd be fired if they did, so all they make is their $9 or $10 an hour.
It makes sense casinos don't want dealers to be tipped because this is money that people could be blowing on the craps and roulette tables rather than tipping people.

uh are you comparing 100NL live to like micro stakes online? because it makes no sense to compare different stakes. nobody who has actually played a decent amount of 100NL+ online and offline would ever agree with what you just wrote

I've played generally between $10 and $50 NL live and online so I am comparing the same limits, and I've found online to be much more profitable.
I've never played over $100 though.

^ wait are you talking about 10 dollar big blinds and 50 dollar big blinds?

10nl and 50nl are .05/.10 and .25/.50 respectively lol, so im assuming you mean big blinds.

Where can you possibly find between 10nl and 50nl live?

edit: when people say live they typically mean casinos, not home games

I meant the tournaments I play have entry fees between 10 to 50 dollars.
I don't play cash games. Sorry I phrased that misleadingly.

Ahhhh..I learned something new. I did not know UK dealers could not take tips. That is indeed crap pay then :) Not sure we would have any dealers if they made $9 Straight

A friend of mine in San Diego played professionally for about 10 years. Never really made it big but just enough to grind out a living. After talking to him numerous times, I would be quite content to just have poker augment my current income. I have several people I am responsible for and no way can I put them in jeopordy.

I really feel for some of you who have lost your job. If you decide to make poker your living. I wish you the best of luck, from what I have seen both on-line and especially live poker; its a difficult way to make ends meet.

It's kinda like being in a rock n roll band. Only a very, VERY few will ever hit the big time.

Is this post about how much does it cost to live for 1mth. OR is it about "How many poker plays are playing professionally in the world?"
Something to keep in mind, for each player who is playing professionally (playing poker for a living), there's another 10players who are losing to support him.
Maybe another question... how many players are there playing online poker in the world and how many are losing $1,000+ per month?

Where I reside (small town in Western canada, 10,000 pop., lots of recreation, mountains, fantastic ski resort, nice river for fishing (a few hundred yds. from my doorstep), lots of beaches & small lakes, mild winters, very warm summers) it is very cheap to live. .
The 800sq ft. apt. I live in rents for only $339/mth. - heat & hotwater incl. Power bill is approx. $24/mth. Great spot for a professional online poker player to live (except they'd be missing out on all of the great outdoor recreation here, lol... anyone getting a tan this year??).

i've never seen live tournies for that little before but w/e.

in terms of cash games, online is much more difficult when compared to its repective limit.

1knl online= a meelion times harder then 1knl live.

i think everyone would like the easy way of making money specially by just playing poker but in the most of us might just lose money rather than making money...LOL
i know i did lose money and was aiming to make money at first i thought i was on the right way but in just a blink of an eye i was going the other way.
