Hi David, I was reading this thread with great interest and I want to tell you something. 6 years ago I left my university career because I wanted to be a writer and for that I did not need to study a career. As you can imagine, everyone told me that I was making a big mistake, the chances of success were almost nil. Well, today I live from my stories. I'm not rich or famous, but I do what I like.
People live with fear their lives, and when someone tries to break that fence they go crazy: "do not do this, do not risk it, we did not do it". But certain dreams need you to jump into the void and give the best of you. It's okay if you do not leave your work and take things slowly, but go for your dream my friend. I'm sure you will not regret it.

My advice don't quit your day job until you have substantial savings and a huge bankroll built up. The best players have huge swings of winnings and losses. If you can't cover the huge loss, you will be bankrupt and out of a job.

I think it's wrong to quit my job and just play poker. Everywhere should be guided by the rule of the "Golden section". This is more reasonable in my opinion.

Hello guys/girls,

I have decided that I want to leave my job and play poker, I have no intention of going out to win big I just want to earn enough to get by and I will see where the journey takes me. I have played on stars since 2006 and I want to give all my time to the game online and live. I will start with £50 deposit on Wednesday and I will gradually build my cash at the cash tables and play at least 1 tournament per day. I am fully aware that this is going to be a tough grind and it won't go my way all the time. So firstly I want to add to my poker book collection, does anyone know of any good poker books? I think negreanu would be the best but does anybody have any good books about strategy? I will also use my poker tracker to monitor my stats.
Thanks
I'm kind of in the same mind frame. Have a roll built up from cash games and would like to give it a go. My problem is I live in Maine and the games are far away and few and far between. Recently thinking about making the move to Vegas. Didn't think it was feasible until I saw the rent prices in northern Vegas. Monthly nut would be about a quarter of what it costs in Maine so might give it a go. I'd suggest starting with online poker courses as books get outdated very quick. Upswing poker or poker coaching.com are reliable sources to start helping to improve your game. Good luck on your journey man.

Well guys I started off on Internet because this is my bread and butter but I found it extremely difficult so I switched to live games in the casino and I have managed to live comfortably for 4 months now and I play 3-4 times per week

Yeah poker is getting more and more popular apart from the bots and cheats ruining it.

I am no pro so cant give you advice on how to become one. But I always thought you quit your job, when you can easily live from poker. Not quitting your job just in hopes that you could live from poker.:eek:

Also, I dont mean to be disrespectful but making a thread with CC pros to give you advice on how to become a pro, looks to me like you just buyed a ball, shoot some 3s, won in some kind of basketball tourney, and your next question is ok now, so how do I become Steph Curry? :p

Start by posting your winrate, your ROI. Then post your living expenses. And then ask if it is possible to make a living by depositing $50 and playing one tourney a day with those variables.
I am no pro but I'll bet its not.
Dont get fooled by Dwan, or Jungleman starting from $50. Chris Ferguson got from $0 to $10.000 in a year, so what? If you are the next Dwan you should already knew it by now. Your ROI would scream it.

Ps. How many hours do you work a day that its not possible to achieve your goal which is playing a tourney a day?????

Good luck

It is all poker lovers' dream to play poker and live on it. I wish I could do the same but I agree with other people recommending not to leave your job. even though I think you already did :)
If you are planning to play cash and build a bankroll, it takes quite a long time and in cash games people who has most of the money at the table generally play very aggressive.
I work and still play 1-2 tournament a day and even more at weekends so preparing myself to play more in 3-4 years. We will see :)
Good luck with your decision

I play most days and I am not exactly sure what the ROI is because I got fed up tracking them all, I am winning though on both tournaments and cash and I'm making around 2000 gbp each month live profit.

Maybe you should first read some books like u want before going for this 100%, perfect your game and apply what youve learned. Play as much as you can after work and build up your future untill you feel comfortable leaving your job.

Good luck and have fun

Never run without a backup plan

Really ?? Quit your job first?? There are millions of good poker players out there, what makes you think you can be one of the .0001 % that will be successful?? Prove yourself first before you quit you job. Win a few hundred thousand first.

I hope you have enough cash to support yourself for a least two years. And what does going pro even mean. Just because it will be your only source of income does mean you are a pro. Sorry but that is a title you have to earn. I call myself a pro ball player but I am not good enough to play for a living, so I guess I am not a pro. If you can get a sponsor, I think that means you are a pro. Good Luck at the tables, wishing you the best.

Dear friend, I wish you success in this difficult matter. I advise you to start with microlimits, to do reviews and analysis of your played hands more often.:jd4:

I hope from all my heart that you are making a comfortable living out of playing live poker, because to me it just sounds too good, especially since your main experience as a recreational player was on the internet. Best of luck to you!

Going pro

I will start by saying I love your enthusiasm for the game we all enjoy. On turning pro I will say this, is it impossible... No. Likely to happen... the same response. Basically Professional means you get paid to do it. The way I see it, If your using your own finances to bankroll, sounds like amateur honestly. Does LeBron James pay to play Basketball? Good luck on your poker endeavors... stick to your dream and poker stars might be paying you to play!

You want to turn pro with a 50 dollars deposit? Deposit more than that or just keep your job. But if you can turn that 50 dollars into 5000 dollars playing tournaments, then maybe quit your job.

I can only tell you that, if you're going really to follow that line, at the beginning you should NOT leave the job. And i mean not only, firstly, for your own good (unless you are an Hellmuth, Negreanu, you know), but also because if something goes wrong, you still have monthly cash to continue investing, on a regular basis.
Don't leave your dream, but don't kill it right from the start, and your life too.

Absolutely true. If you're thinking about going pro, DO NOT LEAVE THE JOB. If you deal with bad beats and misplaying hands, you have your job to fall back on for an income. It takes time to build your bankroll up.

A very bold decision to devote yourself and your income to playing poker. I can only wish good luck and patience, it will not be easy. It is advisable to gradually switch to live poker from a game online. The game in online is confused by the incredible distribution of cards, which often annoys:confused:
