I played my first real life game last night after taking off a few months. There were 2 tournaments, both $10 buyin. The first one had 6 players and the second had 7. I struggled in both, and had a hard time getting chips, and was short stacked most of the night in both tournaments. What do you recommend doing in gaining chips early in a tournament.

With 6 or 7, there's no reason to get chips early. If the blinds are very small, (they usually are in home games) then limp pp's trying to hit a set, or sc's for straight/flush value. Otherwise, you only want to be playing solid cards, TT+, AK, maybe AQ until blinds get larger.

Players will likely be completely unaware of proper sng play, and will eliminate each other for meaningless pots, pushing you closer to the money.
