Ultimately video poker is a calculable game with limited variables compared to Hold'em (which has extreme variables many of which are not predictable like betting size) and hence solvable hence controllable. Solvable games are offered for guaranteed long term profit by the wicked casino. No matter what you do you are guaranteed to lose money in Video Poker, so why play? No you cannot game the system by picking the right machine but you can game the system by quitting after winning big. Hold'em on the other hand is a legendary game that is known to be very beatable generally considering the variables (now a days everyone is solid or better at Hold'em) so the games to profit from are the other poker variants especially PLO. Now there are other variables to take into account like promos overlap, but generally stay away from calculable games unless you are playing them very short term for disposable sums of money.
Only time I play Video Poker is on vacation for less than $200, Deuces Wild, with preferable a qualitative promo like progressive jackpot attached other than that I enjoy myself at the Hold'em table or PLO tables online.
