After all this time, I think I have something to add here (how dare I, I mean, I'm just the thread creator. :p ) I find that tournaments are a greater THRILL compared to at least low stakes cash games. In a tournament, it hardly matters if you're second place in chips or 222nd, you can still find yourself out the door in a VERY short span of hands. Thrill in cash games comes from a sheer amount of money being wagered in my opinion, as it is the case that, as many of you have pointed out, it boils down to basically pure +EV and if you lose your stack you can just go and get another one. This latter thrill is just not one I'm equipped to experience, and I can't play poker if there's no thrill in it, I gotta keep interested!

Yeah cash game microstakes isn't too exciting it's more of a grind. Fancy play = leveling yourself because calling stations wont fold. If they're betting they usually have it. Majority of the time it's just plain ole ABC poker.

Obviously high stakes you'll see more triple barrel bluffs, floating, and etc. but the microstakes isn't as exciting as one would expect for poker.

Tournaments are fun once you get past the money bubble IMO :D

The first step is the bankroll to play the lower limit there. The tables of 0.01 / 00:02, or NL2

In the cash game we usually refer to the limits with the buy-in you use to sit at the table, which usually always be 100bbs. So has NL2, NL5, NL10 and so on.

Another thing, the cash game is not played fullring, that is, the tables of 9 people. It is better to play Cash Game 6max. Because this is a game much more cool, active, where can not really be too tight otherwise the blinds swallow you. Also in 6max table it is very easy to explore the trends of the players, since the inability to only play strong hands makes everyone more vulnerable world and will happen many post-flop situations.

quit whilst ahead

I have the same problem, if i join to a cash table with 100 euro in a half of a hour or one hour i make 400, 500 after that i'm going down... i don't know what's the problem...
That will be the computer generator not allowing you to win as much so stop playing come back later and repeat.

I have a lot of trouble when I try to play both styles at the same time. Generally now I will stick to one mentality ( Tournament or Ring) and stick to it until I either get bored or start to lose my focus. Then I will either take a break or switch to the other. I find that I have better results that way.

I play looser and more aggressive in cash games because I know I can buy back in but I play it fairly tight in tournament play because I want to put money in good spots.

For me cash games are where the long term money is at. And were the better players are to. Know I don't want to be misread, and have people think I'm saying tournament players are less skilled than cash game players. What I am saying is that with an initial buy-in of a similar amount, you will find a larger ratio of weak players to strong ones in tournaments than in cash games. I would rather be at a table with a Poker Player then a Donkey!

In a no limt cash game, would it not be possible for a beginner to dull some of the pro's big-stack advantage by just playing a smaller stack? Weak hands you fold, strong you go all-in, and the less experienced player has basically made all his decisions before the Turn card. In other words, he depends on the strength of his hand rather than his skil, at reading people. And he avoids tanking his whole BR.
Or is this a really bad idea?

i hate cash... it might be more profitable but i under my opinion is really boring. you dont have an immediate target. just... making money long term? dont agree with that. in tournament poker you get deeper and deeper... and then eliminated... and fold hands you wouldnt in a cash game. you get to play both short and big stack strategy. take into account bubbles and either fold your way to the money or bully the table of cowards to build your stack.. it is really much more emotionally triggering as i see it

Cash games are great, MTTs are great. Poker is great!!! but seriously, cash games are a serious commitment, you can go broke really fast and you don't have time for emotions, the swings will happen if you play enough so you have to make sure you have the roll to handle them at the level you play

drestunrn2 I respect your opinions but why do you state you can go broke rather quickly in cash games? If you are solid at BR management you can endure numerous bad sessions in your cash games, wait out the cold period and still be profitable for the year.

In cash games, you can play with the same range. In mtts, you have to open it because of the blind´s progression.

I preffered tournys. It used to be easy to find big payouts for free or almost free.
Now I play more cash games. I can leave anytime.
