You also want to take the raiser's skill level and aggression into consideration. If there is a lot of implied odds and you know that villain will pay off light you could potentially increase your cold call range from the BB vs their wide range.

It takes a lot of practice and skill to defend your BB though, but it becomes easier once get a grasp of villain's range and learn how to exploit their tendencies by representing hands that you think are not available in their perceived range.

Try to put some variation in your own pre flop betting or else players will know if your having pocket pair, high cards or something else.

From the SB, play and raise the same hands you'd play from late position. Against a raise, same hands as from early position. BB, same hands you'd play from late position for one bet. reraise your strongest hands.

I'm not really concerned about defending my blind in a cash game, unless the stakes are crazy high... it sucks playing pots outta position after the flop.
