$10 NL HE Full Ring: BB 77 facing 3xBB

I'm in the BB with pocket 7s and the first player bets 3xBB. Everybody folds back to me.

Player is complete unknown -- I'm new to the table.

My question isn't so much this exact situation, but how, in such situations, does one calculate the odds of winning.

That is, I can run the programs, and depending on what I think the player has my chance of winning runs from 35% thru to 85% (assuming he isn't playing garbage, whereas my chance could be 14%).

Without knowing the player, is there a correct thing to do here? I folded, since unless I hit a 7 on the flop I'm prone to call like a fool and lose my stack.

Depends.

If villian has a full stack (ie $10+) then we are always getting correct odds to call. Even if he didn't quite have $10 i would go ahead and pitch in the .20 to setmine

Edit: It's also important to note that you generally need to play these situation as folding w/o a set on flop unless your getting free cards or something crazy like 6 8 9 for this particular hand. No need to turn your hand into a bluff if you put him on good cards
