I play online mostly for fun, but obviously to make a little money aswel

I do well in sng's. But as soon as i enter a cash game i get killed. I play super tight and when i go all in i get a bad beat 90% of the time.

I actually cant remember the last time i doubled up.

When you talk about sng grinding, whats the best format to play in?

thanks

I hear you man, i'm the same, but if i'm being perfectly honest, i'd probably admit that i'm not good enough at cash, it's a different beast..

I could say that too, but its not as if i dont make the right plays, im usually waiting for QQ KK AA, and try to get all my chips in

And when i do, the caller allways seems to hit trips, or a straight.

I dont think just waiting for those 3 hands and just shoving is the right thing... there's guys on here 100 times better than me, but i'm sure they will tell you, play your range according to your position, and bet properly...
My weakness is making the odd silly mistake that costs me my stack, or being afraid to bet properly (ie, playing with scared money).

Im sure other guys on here can give you much more constructive advice..

Hey Bert,

post some of your hands in the hand history analysis section, but dont post the entire hand. Just up till the point where the money can go in or not. That way people dont see the results and can give their opinions why the bet/fold/raise should be the best play.

Also don't just post hands where you had AA/KK and got it AIPF, post interesting spots.

Also I can relate to cash games killing you but winning at SnGs. Lol at getting a bad beat 90% of the time though, selective memory much?

Winning at cash doesn't have anything to do with quitting when you're ahead fwiw

Cash games take a while to get to grips with. Your game needs a lot of work if you're waiting for QQ+ and getting all your chips in.

If they "always seem to hit trips (I think you mean set), or a straight", it's because they are playing hands with high implied odds such as low PP's and SC's against you, knowing that you will spew the flop with your precious over-pair. Gotta fold AA sometimes post-flop :)

Perhaps he/she meant they carry on too long when tired or hungry...

I play Omaha so a lot of times I have to play ring while waiting for a SnG to fill up. I really prefer ring. As a holdem player there are too many games thee to even think of switching to ring so I'd have to wonder why anyone would do it when they know they aren't as good at it.

You editing other people's posts now lol..

If he plays when tired it can be like playing on tilt, obviously, this theory relies on him making bad decisions because of being tired...stop being argumentative, 1 of us on the forum is bad enough..my mum always tells me I could start an argument in an empty room... :D

lol I was totally kidding, of course if you play when over tired or hungry you will do worse, but that is not why you would consistantly lose cash games.

Anyone with a reasonable amount of intelligence and self-discipline can win at cash. Factor in other things like work ethic, and the real question is at what level.

Downswings aside, most losing players lose because of things they do or don't do that work against them becoming winners. Some don't work / learn enough. Some over-rate themselves and play above their skill level. Some don't exercise decent BRM. Some are prone to tilt. Some insist their losses are due to luck, which means they don't really feel they have to improve their games to win. Etc. Etc. Etc.

Different (and more complex in my opinion) strategy involved in cash games. Some people just can't make the adjustments from tournaments. I switched over to cash about a year and a half ago and had to basically relearn the game. I started using HM a lot more and Leak Buster with it which gave me a solid idea of what I was doing wrong, what I needed to change, and a little of what I was doing right.

Cash games, in my experience, require you to be comfortable with much more bankroll variance than tournaments. For example, I was up today about 100BB and lost the same amount in one hand. Big blind called a preflop raise, had A,Ks flopped a king, turn came an A, lost 100 big blinds to a guy who called the raise with pocket 4s and hit a set. Such is life. Just my $.02

Same over here... I can keep up with the other players for an hour or so. Always forget to stop.. and eventually loose all my winnings (plus the rest of my bankroll)

But the sensation of real-money play is so much mooooooooooooore then practiceplay isn't it;) ??!

bankroll variance? You mean swings? If so, I'd have to say it's just the opposite of what you're suggesting here - tournament play will test anyone's mental fortitude (or perhaps sanity is a better word?)

I suppose that would depend on how much of your bankroll you're committing to the tournament. If it's a large percentage than yeah, that would be maddening.

Lying in wait to get all in playing a cash game is a recipe for disaster. The better player recognizes you are doing this and will easily trap you. It shows and proves only level one thinking and in order to be successful in cash you have got to at least be able to operate at level three.
